Reynolds Channel
Reynolds Channel is a strait in Nassau County, New York that separates Long Beach Barrier Island, which contains the City of Long Beach and the villages of Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, and Point Lookout, from Long Island, Barnum Island, Harbor Isle, and various uninhabited islands between Long Beach Island and Long Island. The channel begins at the East Rockaway Inlet to the west, and ends at Point Lookout to the east, where it merges with the Jones Inlet. The channel is named after William H. Reynolds, a developer and former State Senator who greatly built up Long Beach Island in the early 20th century. A strait is an oceanic landform connecting two seas or two other large areas of water. The surface water generally flows at the same elevation on both sides and through the strait in either direction. Most commonly, it is a narrow ocean channel that lies between two land masses. Jones Beach Island
Jones Beach Island is one of the outer barrier islands off the southern coast of Long Island in the U.S. state of New York. Etymology It is named for Major Thomas Jones, who first came to Long Island in 1692, where he proceeded to build the island's first brick house near Massapequa. Jones built a whaling station on Jones Island near the present site of Jones Beach State Park in 1700. Jones Beach Island is sometimes referred to as Oak Beach Island and is the former home of the infamous Oak Beach Inn. Loop Parkway
The Loop Parkway (also known as the Loop) is a parkway in Nassau County, New York, in the United States. It serves the barrier islands south of Long Island itself, beginning on Long Beach Barrier Island at an intersection with Lido Boulevard in Point Lookout. From here, it heads generally east–west across Alder and Meadow islands to an interchange with the Meadowbrook State Parkway on Jones Island, a part of Jones Beach State Park located just north of Jones Beach Island. Long Beach Bridge
The Long Beach Bridge is a twin drawbridge crossing Reynolds Channel, connecting Long Beach and Island Park, New York. There is no toll. The bridge starts in Long Beach as Long Beach Boulevard. At Barnum Island, the main road continues northeast as Austin Boulevard, while Long Beach Road branches to the north. Each span carries traffic in one direction. New York State Route 878 (NY 878) is a state highway on Long Island and in New York City. The route exists in two sections, which both form the Nassau Expressway. NY 878's western terminus is the Belt Parkway and Conduit Avenue ( NY 27) in Ozone Park, within southern Queens. Its southern terminus is immediately before the Village of Atlantic Beach, at the Atlantic Beach Bridge in Lawrence, within southwestern Nassau County. Atlantic Beach Bridge
The Atlantic Beach Bridge is a long toll drawbridge carrying NY 878, connecting Lawrence and Atlantic Beach (Park Street), New York, while passing over the west end of Reynolds Channel. The bridge also provides direct access to the Rockaway Peninsula via Seagirt Boulevard. The original bridge opened in 1927, and the current bridge opened in 1952 and was rehabilitated in 1998. Typically, the toll is $2.00 (USD) for vehicles under 5 tons (10,000 lb) in each direction as of January 1, 2007. Vehicles over 5 tons are $2 per axle.
