Resonating Device
A resonating device is a structure used by an animal that improves the quality of its Animal communication, vocalizations through amplifying the sound produced via acoustic resonance. The benefit of such an adaptation is that the call's volume increases while lessening the necessary Biological thermodynamics, energy expenditure otherwise required to make such a sound. The resulting sound may also Radiation, radiate more efficiently throughout the environment. The resonator may take the form of a hollow (a resonant space), a chamber (referred to as a resonating chamber), or an otherwise air-filled cavity (such as an air sac) which may be part of, or adjacent to, the animal's sound-producing Organ (biology), organ, or it may be a structure entirely outside of the animal's body (Habitat, part of the environment). The siamang (, ; ''Symphalangus syndactylus'') is an endangered arboreal, black-furred gibbon native to the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The largest of the gibbons, the siamang can be twice the size of other gibbons, reaching in height, and weighing up to . It is the only species in the genus ''Symphalangus''. Fossils of siamangs date back to the Middle Pleistocene. Two features distinguish the siamang from other gibbons. First, two digits on each foot—the second and third toes—are partially joined by a membrane, hence the species, specific name ''Syndactyly, syndactylus'', from the Ancient Greek σύν, ''sun-'', "with" + δάκτυλος, ''daktulos'', "finger". Second, a large gular sac (throat pouch), found in both males and females of the species, can be inflated to the size of the siamang's head, allowing it to make resonating calls.
