Resilience (power System)
Definitions for power system resilience vary, but a commonly cited definition was proposed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Com- mission (FERC), which defines it as ”the ability to withstand and reduce the magnitude and/or duration of disruptive events, which includes the capacity to anticipate, absorb, adapt to, and/or rapidly recover from such an event". Attributes that define a resilient system are, for example, predictive capacity, robustness, adaptability, rate of recovery and adaptive capacity. All systems have different vulnerabilities, and resilience is therefore studied in both a system- and event-specific manner. The event scope for resilience is often defined as high-impact low-probability events, or extreme events. However, as extreme climate-related events and cybersecurity events have grown more common, a more universal definition is that resilience deals with n-k, k>5 events. Power Grid
''Power Grid'' is the English-language version of the second edition of the multiplayer German-style board game ''Funkenschlag'', designed by Friedemann Friese and first released in 2004. ''Power Grid'' was released by Rio Grande Games. In the game, each player represents a company which owns power plants and tries to supply electricity to cities. During the game, players bid on power plants and buy resources to provide electricity to the growing number of cities in their network. Background ''Power Grid'' was developed from ''Funkenschlag'', the original game, which had players draw their networks with crayons instead of playing on a fixed map. Power System Reliability
The power system reliability (sometimes grid reliability) is the probability of a normal operation of the electrical grid at a given time. Reliability indices characterize the ability of the electrical system to supply customers with electricity as needed by measuring the frequency, duration, and scale of supply interruptions. Traditionally two interdependent components of the power system reliability are considered: * power system adequacy, a presence in the system of sufficient amounts of generation and transmission capacity; * power system security (also called operational reliability), an ability of the system to withstand real-time contingencies (adverse events, e.g., an unexpected loss of generation capacity). Ability of the system to limit the scale and duration of a power interruption is called ''resiliency''. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a nonprofit corporation based in Atlanta, Georgia, and formed on March 28, 2006, as the successor to the North American Electric Reliability Council (also known as NERC). The original NERC was formed on June 1, 1968, by the electric utility industry to promote the reliability and adequacy of bulk power transmission in the electric utility systems of North America. NERC's mission states that it "is to assure the effective and efficient reduction of risks to the reliability and security of the grid".
