René Burri (footballer)
René Burri (born 7 July 1941) is a Swiss former footballer who played in the 1960s. He played as a defender. Burri first played for local team FC Birsfelden in the fourth tier of Swiss football. He joined FC Basel's first team for their 1961–62 season under manager Jiří Sobotka. Burri played his first game for his new club in the 1961–62 International Football Cup game away against Sparta Rotterdam. In this game he also scored his first goal for Basel, but this could not save the team from a 2–5 defeat. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the home game at the Landhof on 16 September as Basel were defeated 1–2 by Luzern. He scored his first league goal for his club on 4 March 1962 in the home game as Basel won 4–3 against Fribourg. In their 1962–63 season Basel won the Swiss Cup as they beat the favourites Grasshopper Club Zürich in the Final. Defender (football)
In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield player whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Defenders fall into four main categories: centre-backs, full-backs, sweepers, and wing-backs. The centre-back and full-back positions are most common in modern formations. The sweeper and wing-back roles are more specialised, often limited to certain formations dependent on the manager's style of play and tactics. Heinz Blumer
Heinz Blumer (* 7 January 1942) is a Swiss retired footballer who played in the 1960s and 70s. He played mainly in the position as defender, but also as midfielder. Football career Basel Blumer played in the youth teams of FC Basel and advanced to their first team in 1961. Between the years 1961 and 1965 he played a total of 135 games for Basel scoring a total of 56 goals. 72 of these games were in the Nationalliga A, 15 games were in the Swiss Cup, 14 were international games (Cup of the Alps, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, Inter-Cities Fairs Cup) and 34 were friendly games. He scored 30 goal in the domestic league, 8 in the Cup, 3 international and the other 15 were scored during the test games. Walter Baumann
Walter Baumann (born 21 July 1942) is a Swiss former footballer who played in the 1960s. He played mainly as a forward, but also as a defender. Football career Baumann joined Basel's first team during their 1962–63 season under trainer Jiří Sobotka. On 15 April 1963 the Wankdorf Stadium hosted the Cup Final and Basel played against favorites Grasshopper Club. Two goals after half time, one by Heinz Blumer and the second from Otto Ludwig gave Basel a 2–0 victory and their third Cup win in the club's history. Baumann was not in the team that played, but in the squad. After playing in the Cup of the Alps matches and five test games he played in the 1963–64 European Cup Winners' Cup match against Celtic on 17 September 1963. Peter Füri
Peter Füri (9 October 1937 – 11 May 2015) was a Swiss football player and manager, who played during the 1950s and 1960s. Career Füri started his youth football with the small local club FC St. Clara and later joined the youth teams of FC Basel. During his active career Füri first played as a striker. After his youth football he moved tor FC Concordia Basel who at that time played in the 1st League, the third tier of Swiss football. At the end of the 1956–57 season Concordia won their central group and in the play-offs became 1st League champions and were promoted to the Nationalliga B. Füri stayed with the club and played the next two season for the team. However, at the end of the 1958–59 season they were second last in the division and suffered relegation. 1963–64 FC Basel Season
The 1963–64 season was FC Basel, Fussball Club Basel 1893's 70th season in their existence. It was their 18th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after their promotion in the 1945–46 season. They played their home games either in their old Landhof Stadium or in their new St. Jakob Stadium. Lucien Schmidlin was club chairman for the second year running. Overview Pre-season Jiří Sobotka continued his job as club manager, it was his third consecutive year as manager. Basel played a total of 55 games this season. Bruno Michaud
Bruno Michaud (14 October 1935 — 1 November 1997) was a Swiss football player, football coach and politician. He played as a defender mainly for FC Basel and in the Switzerland national team. Football career Club Despite a two-year period with Lausanne-Sport in the late 1950s, FC Basel was Michaud's regular club. Between 1955 and 1970 he belonged to the FCB first team and as their defensive chief, he was one of the decisive co-founders of the "era Benthaus". He won the Swiss Cup twice and the championship three times under coaches Georges Sobotka and Helmut Benthaus. The fact that Michaud only reached the national team at the age of 32, had to do with the skills of his predecessor, because for years the position in the defensive center was occupied by a similarly large sports man, Heinz Schneiter.
