René Jean-Louis Célestin Abadie (13 August 1935 – 11 July 1996) was a French cycle sport, cyclist. Bayonne () is a city in southwestern France near the France–Spain border, Spanish border. Mercier (cycling Team)
Mercier was a French professional cycling team that promoted and raced on Mercier racing bikes. Together with the Peugeot (cycling team), Peugeot team, the Mercier team had a long presence in the road bicycle racing, cycling sport and in the Tour de France from 1935 until 1984. History was the main sponsor of the team from at least 1935 on until 1969. From 1946 on, the team wore a purple jersey which in 1950 became the characteristic purple jersey with yellow neck and cuff lining which was to stay with the team until Mercier was no longer the main sponsor of the team in 1969. From 1935 to 1955 the team had as second sponsor Hutchinson and was the Mercier-Hutchinson team. From 1956 the team was known as Mercier-BP-Hutchinson which it would continue as until 1969 after which the sponsor Mercier became the second sponsor of the team. The men's individual road race at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, was held on Friday 7 December 1956. There were 88 participants from 28 nations. Of the 88 starters 44 rode the distance to the end. The event was won by Ercole Baldini of Italy, the nation's first medal in the men's individual road race. Arnaud Geyre took silver, France's first medal since back-to-back golds in 1936 and 1948. Alan Jackson (cyclist), Alan Jackson's bronze was Great Britain's first medal in the event since 1896. French and British officials protested against Baldini's victory, claiming that he was protected from the hot sun by the Olympic film unit van that drove alongside him, but the protest was upheld. The start of the race was delayed fifteen minutes when it was discovered that two 'unauthorised' Irish cyclists, Tom Gerrard and Paudie Fitzgerald were in the starting field.
