Regionalliga West (1963–1974)
The ''Regionalliga West'' was the second-highest level of the German football league system in the west of Germany from 1963 until the formation of the 2. Bundesliga in 1974. It covered the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, the most populous state of Germany. Overview The league started out in 1963 with 20 teams in the league, which was reduced to 18 the year after. It was formed from the eleven clubs of the Oberliga West (1947–63), Oberliga West which were not admitted to the Introduction of the Bundesliga, new Bundesliga, from the top eight clubs of the 2. Oberliga West and one club from the Verbandsliga Westfalen, the Lüner SV. The Regionalliga West was as such a continuation of the Oberliga West under a different name and a tier lower. Flag Of North Rhine-Westphalia
The flag of the Germany, German State of North Rhine-Westphalia is a horizontal tricolor consisting of green, white and red. Design After the establishment of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1946, the tricolor was first introduced in 1948, but was not formally adopted until 1953. The plain variant of the tricolor is considered the civil flag and state ensign, while government authorities use the state flag (''Landesdienstflagge'') which is defaced with the coat of arms of North Rhine-Westphalia, state's coat of arms. The flag is a combination of the two former provinces of Prussia that comprise most of the state: the Rhine Province and Province of Westphalia, Westphalia. The state ensign can easily be mistaken for the flag of Hungary, as well as the former civil flag of Iran, flag of Iran (Persia) (1910–1980) and the flag of the Parti patriote. Regionalliga Berlin
The Regionalliga Berlin was the second-highest level of the German football league system in the city of West-Berlin in Germany from 1963 until the formation of the 2. Bundesliga in 1974. It was by far the smallest of the five Regionalligas. Overview The Regionalliga Berlin started out in 1963 with 10 teams in the league. From 1965 the league was expanded to 16 clubs. In 1969-70 the league played with 14 clubs and after that always with 12. It was formed from the clubs of the Oberliga Berlin which finished second to eighth and the first three clubs of the Amateurliga Berlin. The last winner of the Oberliga Berlin, Hertha BSC Berlin, was promoted to the new Bundesliga and the bottom two teams of the Oberliga were relegated to the Amateurliga. FC Gütersloh
FC Gütersloh is a German association football club based in Gütersloh, North Rhine-Westphalia. History The club was formed in 1978 out of the merger of the football sides of '' Sport Vereinigung Arminia Gütersloh'' and '' Deutsche Jugendkraft Gütersloh'' in the hopes that the new club would be more successful than its un-storied predecessors. The union was a bit of a surprise because of some ill-will that had existed between the clubs going back to ''Arminia's'' refusal to share their stadium facility with ''DJK'', and so make it possible for them to play in the Regionalliga in the late 1960s. Both sides had bounced back and forth between the second and third division through the late 1960s and into the 1970s. SpVgg Erkenschwick is a German football club based in Oer-Erkenschwick in North Rhine-Westphalia. History Founded as ''Sportverein Erkenschwick'' in 1916, they joined ''Emscher-Lippe-Spielverband'' to form ''Sportfreunde Erkenschwick'' in 1918, which in then merged with ''Turn- und Leichtathletikverein TV Erkenschwick'' in 1921 to form the sports club still known today as ''TuS 09 Erkenschwick''. The football side separated from this club and joined the footballers from ''Blau-Weiss Oer'' to form ''SpVgg Erkenschwick''. Alemannia Aachen
Aachener Turn- und Sportverein Alemannia 1900 e. V., short Alemannia Aachen (), is a German football club from the western city of Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia. A long-term fixture of the country's second division, Alemannia enjoyed a three-year turn in the Bundesliga in the late 1960s and, after a successful 2005–06 campaign, returned to the first division for a single season. The club slipped to third-division play and in late 2012 entered into bankruptcy. They finished their 2012–13 3. Liga schedule before resuming play in the tier IV Regionalliga West in 2013–14. KFC Uerdingen 05 was a German football club in the Uerdingen district of the city of Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia. The former Bundesliga side, which had its greatest successes in the 1980s, plays in the fourth-level Regionalliga. In 2025, the club's liquidator announced the termination of all activity, citing financial reasons. History The club was founded on 17 November 1905 as Fußball-Club Uerdingen 05. On 1 August 1919, following World War I, FC was joined by Sportvereinigung des Realgymnasiums Uerdingen. During World War II from 1941 to 1945 the club played as part of the combined wartime side Kriegspiel-Gemeinschaft KSG Uerdingen alongside VfB 1910 Uerdingen (which was known from 1910 to 1919 as Sport-Club Preussen Uerdingen).
