Region Västmanland, known before 1 January 2017 as Västmanland County Council (), is the regional council of Västmanland County. The region is primarily responsible for healthcare, public transport, regional development, and cultural activities. History Healthcare in Västmanland County dates back to 1765 when the Swedish government decided to organise hospitals on a county-wide basis. The first hospital in Västerås was established in 1766 and remained the only one in the county for a long time. County councils were formally established in 1862, with the first council meeting in Västmanland held on 14 September 1862, earlier than the official date to avoid clashing with the Västerås Market. Norberg Municipality () is a municipality in Västmanland County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Norberg. History The area, located within Bergslagen, the mining district of central Sweden, has historically been a mining area directed at iron. In the 1970s, archeological finds traced the blast furnace in Lapphyttan to the 12th century, predating the earlier known with 300 years. In the 1390s, Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson was born on a farm outside the town Norberg. He was later to lead notable freedom-rebellions in 1434 against the King. Surahammar Municipality () is a municipality in Västmanland County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Surahammar. The municipality is located some 100 km west of Stockholm in the southern part of the mineral-rich Bergslagen region. Fagersta Municipality () is a municipality in Västmanland County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the city of Fagersta. The ''City of Fagersta'' (instituted in 1944) was in 1967 merged with Västervåla parish (which had been part of Surahammar Municipality since 1963).
