Region Västerbotten, formerly known as Västerbotten County Council (), is the Regions of Sweden, regional council for Västerbotten County, Sweden. The Region is primarily responsible for healthcare and public transport but also oversees regional development and culture. Formation On 1 January 2019, Västerbotten County Council merged with the regional federation and certain business support functions from the county administrative board, forming Region Västerbotten. Responsibilities Healthcare Region Västerbotten is responsible for providing healthcare services in Västerbotten County, including specialised care for northern Sweden and national specialist care for Plexus brachialis, brachial plexus injuries. History The municipal system in Sweden was introduced in 1863 and Nordmaling Municipality was one of the entities created out of a parish. In 1914 a part of the municipality was detached. Åsele Municipality () is a municipalities of Sweden, municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its administrative centre, seat is located in the town of Åsele. It is located in the southernmost fringe of Lapland (Sweden), Lapland. History The first Swedish settlement in Åsele Municipality (it was already inhabited by the native Sami people) was in Gafsele south of Åsele. The settlers were Nils Andersson and his wife Brita. They came from Finland in 1674, trying to avoid the war with Russia. Fredrika, Sweden, Fredrika is a parish in the municipality. It was created in 1799 and named in honour of Queen Frederica of Baden, Frederica Dorothea Wilhelmina of Sweden. Other nearby parishes were named Dorotea and Vilhelmina, but Åsele refused to take any of these names, as they were proud of themselves and the town. Vännäs Municipality
Vännäs Municipality () is a municipalities of Sweden, municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its administrative centre, seat is located in Vännäs. History In 1928 the urban areas in Sweden, locality Vännäs was detached from the rural municipality with the same name, forming the market town (''köping'') of Vännäs. The two entities were reunited in 1971. In 1974 Bjurholm Municipality was added. A split took place in 1980 when Bjurholm Municipality was re-established. Geography The municipality is located just west of Umeå Municipality, where Umeå is the seat, with about 110,000 inhabitants, and it is part of the Umeå region. Vindeln Municipality
Vindeln Municipality () is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Vindeln. History In 1971 a local government reform was implemented in Sweden. This municipality was, however, not amalgamated with any other. But in preparation for the reform the name was changed in 1969 from Degerfors Municipality to Vindeln Municipality. The reason was that there is another Degerfors Municipality (in Örebro County), and every municipality in Sweden should have a unique name. Geography The Vindel River, which is the main tributary of the Ume River, runs through the municipality and has given it its name. Vilhelmina Municipality (; ) is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Vilhelmina. History In 1804 the parish of Volgsjö was renamed Vilhelmina in honour of Queen Frederica Dorothea Wilhelmina of Sweden. In 1947 the locality Vilhelmina was detached from the rural municipality with the same name, forming the market town (''köping'') of Vilhelmina. The two entities were reunited in 1965. Geography Like the rest of northern Sweden (''Norrland''), it is scarcely populated due to its inhospitable conditions and cold climate, but is superb for those who like wildlife and untouched nature. Storuman Municipality
Storuman Municipality (; ; ) is a municipalities of Sweden, municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its administrative centre, seat is located in Storuman. The parish Stensele was created as late as 1822. It was, together with the parish Tärna, made into a municipality in 1863. In 1903 Tärna was detached to form a municipality of its own. The local government reform of 1971 saw the reunification of Stensele and Tärnaby municipalities, thus forming Storuman Municipality with the name taken from its largest town.
