Refugee Paralympic Team
The Refugee Paralympic Team is a group made up of independent Paralympic participants who are refugees. The team competes using the Paralympic flag and Paralympic anthem, and marches first during the Opening Ceremony. Alongside the debut of the Refugee Olympic Team at the 2016 Summer Olympics, a team of refugee para-athletes first competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics as Independent Paralympic Athletes. The Refugee Paralympic Team was formally named starting with the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Zakia Khudadadi became the first person to win an Olympic medal for the Refugee Paralympic Team, winning a bronze medal in the women's –47 kg para taekwondo event at the 2024 Summer Paralympics. International Paralympic Committee
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC; ) is an international non-profit organisation and the global governing body for the Paralympic Movement. The IPC organizes the Paralympic Games and functions as the international federation for nine sports. Founded on 22 September 1989 in Düsseldorf, then part of West Germany, its mission is to "enable Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and inspire and excite the world". Furthermore, the IPC aims to promote the Paralympic values and to create sport opportunities for all persons with a disability, from beginner to elite level. Athletics At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
Para-athletics, Athletics events at the 2016 Summer Paralympics were held in the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from September 2016. 177 events were held across both genders where 1,100 athletes competed. The athletics programme was the largest element of the Games programme in terms of entrants and medals awarded. Classification and events Athletes are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows athletes to compete against others with a similar level of function. Paratriathlon At The 2024 Summer Paralympics
Paratriathlon at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris, France, will be contested at the Pont d'Iéna. It will mark the third time that sport will be included in Summer Paralympics. Venue The Para triathlon course will start from Pont Alexandre III bridge near Seine River and will end at the same place. There will be 750 metre Swim through Seine River, 20 km para cycling at Champs-Élysées, Avenue Montaigne, crossing the Seine by the Pont des Invalides and reaching the Quai d'Orsay and last leg of 5 km run will end at Pont Alexandre III bridge. Qualification There will be total of 11 events (6 men's and 5 women's). There will be 120 slots (54 men, 50 women and 16 gender free). Paralympic Powerlifting
Paralympic powerlifting, also known as para powerlifting and para-lifting, is an adaptation of the sport of powerlifting for athletes with disabilities. The only discipline in Paralympic powerlifting is the bench press. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee ( World Para Powerlifting) and is open to anyone with a minimum level of disability who can extend their arms within 20° of full extension during a lift. Para table tennis, Table tennis at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris, France took place between 29 August and 7 September at the South Paris Arena. Taekwondo At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
Para Taekwondo, Taekwondo at the 2020 Summer Paralympics was held at the Makuhari Messe; the same location where Goalball at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, goalball, Volleyball at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, volleyball and Wheelchair fencing at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, wheelchair fencing took place. Parfait Hakizimana
Parfait Hakizimana (born 1988) is a Burundian parataekwondo practitioner who currently resides in Rwanda. He represented the Refugee Paralympic Team at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in the under 61 kg category. Life Hakizimana was born in Burundi and lived in a settlement camp as a child. He was shot in the arm when he was eight in an attack that also killed his mother. His father took him to a hospital where with basic care he recovered over two years. He began learning taekwondo when he was sixteen. Hakizimana credits the sport with improving his outlook. He set up a martial arts club. When he was twenty his father died on a motorbike and he decided to leave the tribal conflict in Burundi. He emigrated to Rwanda and lives in the Mahama Refugee Camp in Rwanda. Abbas Karimi
Mohammad Abbas Karimi (; born 1997) is a swimmer, who came second in the S5 50 meter butterfly event at the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships, making him the first refugee athlete to win a medal at that competition. He came eighth in the 50 meter butterfly S5 event for the Refugee Paralympic Team at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. In 2021, Karimi obtained US citizenship and started to compete for the USA team. He was part of the US team that won the medley relay event at the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships. He has won national championship events in Afghanistan, Turkey and the US. Karimi competed for the US team at the 2024 Summer Paralympics, and was part of the US team that came second in the Mixed 4×50 m freestyle relay 20 pts event. Paracanoeing at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan took place at the Sea Forest Waterway, the same location where the rowing took place. This was the second appearance of paracanoe in the Paralympic Games and the debut of all three va'a events. Anas Al Khalifa
Anas Al Khalifa (born 1993) is a Syrian paracanoeist, who competed for the Refugee Paralympic Team at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Born in Syria, he now lives in Germany. Personal life Al Khalifa was born in 1993, in Hama. He fled the country due to the Syrian civil war. He lived in an internment camp for two years, before fleeing to Turkey in 2014. He later travelled through Greece, and in August 2015, Al Khalifa arrived in Germany, where he got a job installing solar panels. He has lived in Halle. In 2018, Al Khalifa broke his back in a workplace accident, and became reliant on a wheelchair. His brother was killed in Syria in 2020. Alia Issa
Alia Issa (born 4 January 2001) is one of the six refugees in the Refugee Paralympic Team at the 2020 Summer Paralympics who competed at the delayed Tokyo Paralympics. Issa is based in Athens. She was the first woman parathlete to represent refugees when she competed in the club throw. The day before the opening ceremony it was decided that there would be two flag carriers and that they would be Issa and Abbas Karimi. Issa came eighth in the club throw.
