Referee (rugby League)
Rugby league match officials are responsible for fairly enforcing the ''Laws of rugby league, Laws of the Game'' from a neutral point of view during a match of Rugby league, rugby league football and imposing penalties for deliberate breaches of these Laws. The most senior match official is the ''referee''. They may be assisted by a range of other officials depending on the level and rules of the competition. Equipment The match officials may use the following equipment: ;Coin :The referee organises a coin toss with the team captains, prior to the game commencing. Ashley Klein is an Australian rugby league Rugby league match officials, referee. He first refereed in England, beginning his career in the Rugby League Conference, but returned to Australia and referees in the National Rugby League. Klein refereed the NRL Grand Final, NRL grand finals in 2018, 2022, and 2024. His first professional game was Workington Town v Featherstone Rovers on 8 September 2002. His first Super League game was Huddersfield Giants v Wakefield Trinity, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on 15 June 2003. In 2006 Klein was named by the Rugby League International Federation as referee of the year. Klein was in charge of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup Final in Australia. He quit Super League in 2009 to return to Australia, to rejoin his wife and children.. RFL Match Officials
The RFL Match Officials are a select group of professional Rugby League match officials who officiate the top divisions of Rugby League in Britain. Officials are required to take part in a Fitness Test to maintain and or gain their status. Match Official Department Staff Phil Bentham was re-appointed as the RFL's Head of Match Officials in February 2024. He previously held this post on an interim basis between Jan-March 2021 while Steve Ganson was on leave. Dave Elliot served as the interim Head of Match Officials between Jan-Dec 2023 while an internal investigation took place into the department, ran by Steve Ganson from 2016. Stuart Cummings
Stuart Cummings (born 17 November 1960) is the former Match Officials Director of the Rugby Football League, and a former international referee. Career He played wicketkeeper for Cheshire County Cricket Club in the 1986 and 1987 seasons. He qualified as a rugby league referee in 1988 and was awarded senior referee status in 1991. In his refereeing career, he took charge of over 400 first-grade games, including 4 Challenge Cup finals, 2 World Cup finals and 2 Grand Finals. In 1998 he suffered bruised ribs at the end of a Challenge Cup semi-final during a crowd invasion. He was the former Rugby Football League Match Officials Director.
