Redmond West, Western Australia
Redmond West is a rural locality of the City of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The north-western corner of the locality is taken up by the south-eastern section of the Mount Lindesay National Park and the Blue Gum Creek Nature Reserve is also located within Redmond West. The Hay River passes through it and also forms its boundary in the south-west. Redmond West is on the traditional land of the Minang people of the Noongar nation. Redmond West borders the locality of Redmond, which was established as a siding on the Great Southern Railway in 1912 and gazetted as a townsite in 1916. It is thought that the town was named after the Irish Nationalist leader, John Edward Redmond. John Edward Redmond
John Edward Redmond (1 September 1856 – 6 March 1918) was an Irish nationalism, Irish nationalist politician, barrister, and Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), MP in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. He was best known as leader of the moderate Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) from 1900 until his death in 1918. He was also the leader of the paramilitary organisation the Irish National Volunteers (INV). He was born to an old prominent Catholic Church, Catholic family in rural Ireland; several relatives were politicians. He took over control of the minority IPP faction loyal to Charles Stewart Parnell when that leader died in 1891. Great Southern Railway (Western Australia)
The Great Southern Railway was a railway company that operated from Beverley to Albany in Western Australia between 1889 and 1896. Mineng, also spelt Minang, Minanga, or Mirnong, are an Aboriginal Noongar people of southern Western Australia. Name The ethnonym ''Minang'' is etymologized to the word for south, ''minaq'', which means that the tribe were defined as "southerners". Country The Minang's traditional lands encompassed some from King George Sound northwards to the Stirling Range. It took in Tenterden, Lake Muir, Cowerup and the Shannon River area. Hay River (Western Australia)
The Hay River is a river in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The traditional owners of the area are the Noongar people, who know the river as Genulup. The river was given its English name in December 1829 by naval ship's surgeon Thomas Braidwood Wilson after Sir Robert William Hay, Permanent Under-secretary of State for the Colonies from 1825 to 1836. Wilson saw the river while exploring the area in company with the Noongar man Mokare, John Kent (officer in charge of the Commissariat at King George Sound), two convicts and Private William Gough of the 39th Regiment, while his ship was being repaired at King George Sound.
