The Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra (), founded in 1990, is a symphony orchestra based in Seville, Spain. One of the leading Spanish Orchestras is the resident of the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville. Its first music director was Vjekoslav Šutej. Later music directors include Klaus Weise, Alain Lombard, and Pedro Halffter. The current music director, unanimously elected by the musicians, is John Axelrod. John Axelrod
John Neal Axelrod (born March 28, 1966, in Houston, Texas) is a Swiss/American conductor. In 2024, Axelrod was named Music Director and Principal Conductor of the newly created Swiss National Orchestra. Axelrod was elected Principal Conductor of the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra in a unique open ended contract in 2022. From 2019 to 2023 He was Principal Guest Conductor of the City of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. Teatro De La Maestranza
The Teatro de la Maestranza is an opera house located in Seville, Spain. The theatre was conceived to be one of the main cultural venues of the Seville Expo '92, and the first performance took place in 1991, shortly before the inauguration of the Universal Exposition. The theatre was refurbished in 2005. Although the Teatro de la Maestranza is mainly devoted to opera, there are also performances of Zarzuela (Spanish operetta) and other musical performances. The resident orchestra is the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra (ROSS), and the artistic director is Pedro Halffter. The theatre is the ROSS' main concert venue and the home of the Choir of the Friends' Society of the Maestranza Theatre. Vjekoslav Šutej
Vjekoslav Šutej (31 July 1951 – 2 December 2009) was a prominent Croatian orchestral conductor. Overview Šutej studied conducting under Igor Gjadrov at the Zagreb Music Academy, before obtaining his Master of Music degree in Rome in the class of Franco Ferrara. From 1979 to 1989 he was art director and chief conductor at the Croatian National Theatre in Split. From 1986 to 1990 he was also art director of the Hollybush Festival in New Jersey, which is where he started his international career. From 1990 to 1993 he was music director of La Fenice opera house in Venice, Italy, where he conducted opera productions of ''Eugene Onegin'' and ''Rigoletto''. Alain Lombard (born 4 October 1940, Paris) is a French conductor. Career Lombard attended the Conservatoire de Paris, where his studied violin with Line Talleul and conducting with Gaston Poulet. He subsequently secured an appointment at the Opéra National de Lyon in 1961, and later became principal conductor from 1961 to 1965. Pedro Halffter Caro (born 1971 in Madrid) is a Spanish conductor and composer. He is Artistic Director of the Teatro de la Maestranza (Seville). Born in Madrid, as the son of composer Cristóbal Halffter, he went to boarding school in Germany at the Schule Schloss Salem. After completing his German Abitur he studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, receiving a degree in 1995.
