Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli (russian: Франче́ско Бартоломе́о (Варфоломе́й Варфоломе́евич) Растре́лли; 1700 in Paris, Kingdom of France – 29 April 1771 in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire) was an Italian architect who worked mainly in Russia. He developed an easily recognizable style of Late Baroque, both sumptuous and majestic. His major works, including the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg and the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, are famed for extravagant luxury and opulence of decoration. Biography Rastrelli was born in 1700 in Paris, where his father, Carlo Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1675–1744), a Florentine sculptor and architect who had trained in Rome, was active. Antonio Rastrelli (15 October 1927 – 15 August 2019) was an Italian politician and lawyer. He served as the President of Campania from 1995 until 1999. Early life and family Antonio Rastrelli was born in Portici (Campania) in 1927. His father, Carlo Rastrelli, was among the founders of Neapolitan fascism along with Aurelio Padovani, General Consul of the Fascist Militia M.V.S.N., and Prefectural Commissioner of L'Aquila in the regime of the Italian Social Republic. After the war, Carlo Rastrelli served as Naples deputy mayor under Monarchist National Party's Achille Lauro. Antonio's brother Massimo Rastrelli became a Jesuit priest and was an activist in the social struggle against usury. Carlo Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1675 in Florence, Italy – 18 November 1744 in Saint Petersburg, Russia) was an Italian sculptor and architect. Born in Italy, he moved in 1716 to Russia, where he worked until his death. His most famous works include the Monument to Peter I (St. Michael's Castle) and a wax figure and several busts of Peter the Great.
