Raoul Bott (September 24, 1923 – December 20, 2005) was a Hungarian-American mathematician known for numerous foundational contributions to geometry in its broad sense. He is best known for his Bott periodicity theorem, the Morse–Bott functions which he used in this context, and the Borel–Bott–Weil theorem. Early life Bott was born in Budapest, Kingdom of Hungary (1920–1946), Hungary, the son of Margit Kovács and Rudolph Bott. His father was of Austrian descent, and his mother was of Hungarian Jewish descent; Bott was raised a Catholic by his mother and stepfather in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, now the capital of Slovakia. Bott grew up in Czechoslovakia and spent his working life in the United States. Raoul V. Bossy (1894–1975) was a Romanian diplomat. He pursued his university studies at the Sorbonne, in Paris, where he graduated as Licentiate in Law. He continued his studies at the Diplomatic Section of the École Libre des Sciences Politiques (Diplomatic Section), in Paris. Bossy started his career as diplomat in 1918, after the end of World War I, being private secretary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Raoul François Charles Le Mouton de Boisdeffre, or more commonly Raoul de Boisdeffre (6 February 1839, Alençon – 24 August 1919, Paris) was a French Army general. Biography He studied at the College of Saint Cyr and at the Staff-College. During the Franco-Prussian War he was a major of cavalry and aide-de-camp of General Antoine Chanzy, and in 1882 was promoted to colonel. In 1890 he became assistant chief-of-staff, and in 1893 he was named Chief of Staff of the French Army. Raoul Blanchard (4 September 1877 – 24 March 1965) was a French geographer. He taught at the University of Grenoble from 1906 and devoted most of his research to Alpine and Canadian geography. Early life The son of an inspector of the Department of Water of Orléans, Blanchard attended Holy Cross School and Pothier Secondary School, where he studied under the geographer Louis Gallouédec.
