Ramu Cantonment
Ramu Cantonment () is a cantonment located in Ramu, Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Bangladesh. It is the headquarters of 10th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army. The area of the cantonment is 3000 acres. History and Layout Ramu camp was established at the onset of Chittagong Hill Tracts Conflict. Then, this area was installed under 24th Infantry Division, with at least an infantry battalion under 69th Infantry Brigade and a divisional support engineers company use to be stationed here. Due to 2015 Rohingya refugee crisis, eve of tensity at Rakhine Conflict and recent skirmishes with Myanmar, the ministry of defence proposed to ameliorate a new formation across the southeastern coast during Third Hasina ministry. Ramu Upazila
Ramu () is an upazila of Cox's Bazar District in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh. History The area was called Rammabhumi and had various names over time, including Rangu, Ruhmi, Raahmi, Rameu, and Pamoa. Tibetan historian Lama Taranath noted Chittagong (Chattagram) was known as Rammabhumi during the Pala period. The Tripura history Rajmala and the Alamgirnama also mention names like Ramvu/Rambhu for Ramu. Ramu and surrounding regions were once under Arakanese rule. 2015 Rohingya Refugee Crisis
In 2015, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people were forcibly displaced from their villages and Internally displaced person, IDP camps in Rakhine State, Myanmar, due to sectarian violence. Nearly one million fled to neighbouring Bangladesh and some travelled to Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand by rickety boats via the waters of the Strait of Malacca, Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimated that 50,000 people had left by boat from January to March in 2015 by People smuggling, migrant smugglers. There are claims that, while on their journey, around 100 people died in Indonesia, 200 in Malaysia, and 10 in Thailand, after the traffickers abandoned them at sea. Chittagong Cantonment
Chittagong Cantonment is situated near Bayezid Bostami of Chattogram, Bangladesh. It is the headquarters of 24th Infantry Division. History An Indian army tank captured by the East Bengal Regiment near Lahore in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 is displayed in the cantonment. On 30 May 1981, President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in Chattogram city by officers based in Chattogram Cantonment. East Bengal Regiment
The East Bengal Regiment () is one of the two infantry regiments of the Bangladesh Army, the other being the Bangladesh Infantry Regiment. East Bengal Regiment was founded by Major Abdul Gani. History The East Bengal Regiment was formed on 15 February 1948, following the Partition of India into the Dominion of Pakistan and the Dominion of India in 1947. The core of the unit was made up of soldiers of the Bihar Regiment and the Bengal Pioneer Corps who had opted for Pakistan when partition divided the British Indian Army and the Pakistan Army was born. Bangladesh Infantry Regiment
The Bangladesh Infantry Regiment (BIR) is an infantry regiment of the Bangladesh Army. It was raised in 2001 as the second infantry regiment after the East Bengal Regiment. The regiment was raised initially by renaming some battalions of the East Bengal Regiment, before its own recruits were trained.
