Ralph Cuarón
Ralph Cuarón (1923-2002) was a Chicano communist organizer and leader of many local community associations and workers unions throughout his life. He was an advocate for Black-Brown unity and was heavily criticized for his activism by anti-communist politician Jack Tenney, being described as a "monster" for his idea of a Mexican-American ethnic class consciousness. Cuarón became the first national youth director of Asociación Nacional México-Americana (ANMA) in the 1950s, after being introduced to leftist organizers in Los Angeles by Francisca Flores. In the 1970s, Cuarón moved from East Los Angeles to the mountains of the San Jacinto in Riverside County, where he became active in community organizing and meeting with labor leaders like Lou Diskin and community activists from the Young Workers Liberation League. Chicano
Chicano (masculine form) or Chicana (feminine form) is an ethnic identity for Mexican Americans that emerged from the Chicano Movement. In the 1960s, ''Chicano'' was widely reclaimed among Hispanics in the building of a movement toward political empowerment, ethnic solidarity, and pride in being of Indigenous peoples of Mexico, Indigenous descent (with many Nahuatl language in the United States, using the Nahuatl language or Chicano names, names). Jack Tenney
Jack Breckinridge Tenney (April 1, 1898 – November 4, 1970) was an American politician who was noted for leading anti-communist investigations in California in the 1940s and early 1950s as head of the California Senate Factfinding Subcommittee on Un-American Activities ("Tenney Committee"); earlier, he was a song-composer, best known for " Mexicali Rose". Early life Jack Breckinridge Tenney was born on April 1, 1898, in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to California in 1908. During World War I, he fought with the American Expeditionary Force in France. Upon his return, he married Leda Westrem, a 16 year-old stenographer, and they had a baby while living at 3764 South Main street, Los Angeles. Class Consciousness
In Marxism, class consciousness is the set of beliefs that persons hold regarding their social class or economic rank in society, the structure of their class, and their common class interests. According to Karl Marx, class consciousness is an awareness that is key to sparking a revolution which would "create a dictatorship of the proletariat, transforming it from a wage-earning, propertyless mass into the ruling class". Although Marxists tend to focus on class consciousness (or its absence) among the proletariat, the upper classes in society can also think and act in a class-conscious way. Francisca Flores
Francisca Flores (December 1913, San Diego California - April 1996) was a labor rights activist, an early Chicana feminist, a journal editor, and an anti-poverty activist. Biography Flores was born in 1913 in San Diego, California, to Maria Montelongo, a shop steward and cook, and Vicente Flores, a worker in a slaughterhouse. In 1926, one of her brothers died of tuberculosis; the same year, Flores contracted the same illness and spent the next 10 years in a sanatorium for those afflicted with the sickness. While there, Flores befriended female veterans of Mexican Revolution. These friendships led to her organize a political discussion group for women in the sanatorium, Hermanas de la Revolución Mexicana. The Young Communist League USA (YCLUSA) is a communism, communist youth wing, youth organization in the United States. The stated aim of the League is the development of its members into Communists, through studying socialism and through active participation in the struggles of the American working class.
