Sir Walter Raleigh
Sir Walter Raleigh (; – 29 October 1618) was an English statesman, soldier, writer and explorer. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonisation of North America, suppressed rebellion in Ireland, helped defend Kingdom of England, England against the Spanish Armada and held political positions under Elizabeth I. Raleigh was born to a landed gentry family of Protestant faith in Devon, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne. He was the younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of Sir Richard Grenville. Little is known of his early life, though in his late teens he spent some time in Kingdom of France, France taking part in the French Wars of Religion, religious civil wars. Warehouse District (Raleigh, North Carolina)
The Warehouse District is a major downtown district in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Warehouse District is a growing arts, restaurant, nightlife, and entrepreneurial district located three blocks west of the Raleigh Convention Center. The district consists of six blocks of spacious red-brick buildings, most of which are repurposed warehouses, factories and depots. A LGBT-friendly district, it includes Raleigh's historic gay village, located between Dawson Street and Harrington Street, and is often referred to as the Raleigh Gayborhood. Stormie Forte
Stormie Denise Forte is an American lawyer, radio host, and politician. She is the first African-American woman to serve on the Raleigh City Council. She was appointed to the council on July 14, 2020 and represents District D, which encompasses Southwest Raleigh. On July 8, 2022, Stormie filed to run for Raleigh's at-large district in the 2022 Raleigh election. Biography Forte is a native of Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1989. Janet Cowell
Janet Cowell (born July 19, 1968) is an American politician. She was elected the 63rd mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina on Nov. 5, 2024. She served as the North Carolina State Treasurer from 2009 to 2017, making her the first woman to hold that position in North Carolina. She was previously a two-term member of the Raleigh City Council and a two-term Democratic member of the North Carolina Senate, representing Wake County. The Raleigh Convention Center is a convention and exhibition facility in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina that opened in September 2008. The architect was Tvsdesign with the participation of local firms O'Brien/Atkins Associates and Clearscapes. Description Located at 500 South Salisbury Street, the three-level building contains a exhibit hall, twenty meeting rooms and a ballroom. The ballroom on the highest level can seat up to 2,715 persons (banquet-style) or 3,630 persons (theater-style). The exhibit hall on the lowest level can hold up to 790 booths or seat up to 6,800 persons (banquet-style) or 9,600 persons (theater-style). Extensive acoustics work was performed to not only provide sound isolation between adjacent activities within the center, but also to control noise output to the surrounding community. The North Carolina State University Memorial Belltower (officially the Memorial Tower, informally known as the Belltower) is a free-standing bell tower on the Main Campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina Conceived as a war memorial to honor university alumni killed in World War I and the university's overall participation in the conflict, the Belltower now serves as a perpetual memorial for N.C. This is a list of mayors of Raleigh since the creation of the office in 1857. The Mayor is the head of a council-manager system of government for Raleigh, North Carolina. The office was created in 1857 when a new charter was established for the city to replace the original 1795 charter. Mayor William H. Harrison was mayor during the Confederate States of America and eventually surrendered the city back to the United States before Sherman's March to the Sea arrived. Intendants of Police Under Raleigh's original 1795 charter, the equivalent of a mayor was called the "Intendant of Police" (a title borrowed from France).
