Rafael Calderón Muñoz
José María Vicente Esteban Rafael de Jesús Calderón Muñoz, known as Rafael Calderón Muñoz (October 24, 1869 – June 15, 1943) was a Costa Rican politician and physician. He is cited as "one of the leaders of a circle of Catholic politicians with social concerns". Calderón Muñoz was vice president from 1940 until his death. Biography Born in San José, Costa Rica to Adolfo Calderón Calderón and María Muñoz y Vargas, he graduated in medicine, surgery and obstetrics at the Catholic University of Leuven, east of Brussels. Calderón Muñoz became a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1917. He was a member of the Senate and Consul of Costa Rica in Belgium. He was elected to the Constitutional Congress in 1930, and reelected ten years later. He was President of the First Legislature from 1918–1919, and 1931–1932. Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia (March 8, 1900 – June 9, 1970) was a Costa Rican medical doctor and politician, who served as President from 1940 to 1944. Early life Rafael Angel Calderón Guardia was born on 8 March 1900 in San José. In his youth, Calderón Guardia studied in Costa Rica, France and Belgium, where he married Yvonne Clays Spoelders, who was later to be the first female diplomat of Costa Rica. After finishing his studies in Belgium, Calderón Guardia became a medical doctor and practicing surgeon, which he would remain for most of his life, even after serving as president. Francisco Calderón Guardia (13 June 1906 – 17 July 1977) was a Costa Rican politician. Guardia was a member of the influential Calderón-Guardia family, born in San Jose, the son of Rafael Ángel Calderón Muñoz and Ana Maria Guardia Mora.
