Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a Diving platform, platform or springboard, usually while performing acrobatics. Diving is an internationally recognised sport that is part of the Olympic Games. In addition, unstructured and non-competitive diving is a recreational pastime. Competitors possess many of the same characteristics as gymnastics, gymnasts and dancers, including strength, flexibility, kinaesthetic judgement and air awareness. Some professional divers were originally gymnasts or dancers as both the sports have similar characteristics to diving. The men's 10 metre platform, also reported as ''platform diving'', was one of four diving events on the Diving at the 1980 Summer Olympics programme. The competition was split into two phases: #''Preliminary round'' (27 July) #:Divers performed ten dives. The eight divers with the highest scores advanced to the final. #''Final'' (28 July) #:Divers performed another set of ten dives and the score here obtained was combined with half of the preliminary score to determine the final ranking.
