Racine is an unincorporated community in Newton County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. History A post office called Racine has been in operation since 1869. The town was originally called Dayton, after Dayton, Ohio, as was the surrounding township. However, there was already a Dayton, Missouri, causing confusion for Postal Service deliveries. The name was changed in 1871 to Racine, after Racine, Wisconsin. Seneca is a city in western Newton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,336 at the 2010 census. Located on the southwest border of the state, the city is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Seneca was platted by European Americans in 1869, following the American Civil War. The city was named for the Seneca Nation, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois League, or ''Haudenosaunee''. "This tribe was moved to the Indian Territory not many miles west of town. Neosho (; originally or ) is the most populous city in Newton County, Missouri, United States, which it serves as the county seat. With a population of 12,590 as of the 2020 census, the city is a part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area, a region with an estimated 176,849 (2011) residents. Neosho lies on the western edge of the Ozarks, in the far southwest of the state. The name "Neosho" is generally accepted to be of Native American (most likely Osage) derivation, meaning "clear, cold water", referring to local freshwater springs. The springs attracted varying cultures of Native American inhabitants for thousands of years. The Osage Nation had long occupied the territory at the time of European contact. Joplin is a city in Jasper and Newton counties in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Missouri. The bulk of the city is in Jasper County, while the southern portion is in Newton County.
