Rachel Hopkins
Rachel Louise Hopkins (born 30 March 1972) is a British Labour politician who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Luton South and South Bedfordshire, formerly Luton South, since 2019. Hopkins was a Member of Luton Borough Council from 2011 to 2021, on which she served as Executive Member for Public Health. She served as Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office from 2021 to 2023. Early life and career Rachel Hopkins was born on 30 March 1972 in Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, Luton, and raised in Biscot. Her father, Kelvin, served as Labour MP for Luton North from 1997 to 2019. Her grandfather, Harold, was a physicist twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. She attended Denbigh High School and then Luton Sixth Form College, before going on to study at the University of Leicester. Her first full-time job was at TSB Bank. Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is an acute hospital in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, run by Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It provides medical and surgical services for over 350,000 people in southern Bedfordshire, the north of Hertfordshire and parts of Buckinghamshire. The hospital is often abbreviated to the 'L&D', and employs 3,400 staff. History The hospital has its origins in the Bute Hospital, which was built on land donated by the John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, Marquis of Bute (who lived locally at Luton Hoo) on Dunstable Road in Luton and which opened in September 1882. Although the facility was enlarged by two new wards in July 1902 and by a further extension in July 1912 there was little room for further expansion. The 2011 Luton Borough Council election for the whole of Luton Borough Council (a unitary authority) was held on 5 May 2011. The Labour Party strengthened its control of the council, mainly at the expense of the Liberal Democrats, winning three-quarters of the seats (albeit with less than half of the votes cast). The Liberal Democrats were marginally outvoted by the Conservatives (see table, below) but won twice as many seats, probably due to not putting up candidates for all available seats (only Labour and the Conservatives had the maximum number of candidates). The Trustee Savings Bank (TSB) was a British financial institution that operated between 1810 and 1995 when it was merged with Lloyds Bank (historic), Lloyds Bank. Trustee savings banks originated to accept savings deposits from those with moderate means.
