Rabha Hasong Joutha Mancha
Rabha Hasong Joutha Mancha (RHJM) is a regional political party in the Indian state of Assam primarily supported by the Rabha people. It plays a significant role in the governance of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC), an administrative body established for the development of the Rabha people. The party is a member of the National Democratic Alliance. History The RHJM emerged as a political coalition advocating for the rights and autonomy of the Rabha community within Assam. Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council
The Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) was constituted by the Government of Assam in 1995. It was constituted for development in the areas of economic, educational, socio-cultural and ethnic identity of Rabha people residing in the council area. RHAC has different tribes such as Rabha, Bodo, Garo, Hajong etc. The majority of the population in RHAC is Rabha. Currently the RHAC head office is located at Dudhnoi, Assam. The current chief of the RHAC is Tankeswar Rabha. The RHAC region spans the southern bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River, extending from Jayramkuchi in Lakhipur Rev. Rabha People
The Rabha people are a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group who live mostly in the Northeast Indian state of Assam, with a lesser population in the adjacent state of West Bengal. They primarily inhabit the plains of Lower Assam and the Dooars, while some are found in the Garo Hills. Outside of India, they have a presence in Bhutan, with communities in nine districts. Most of the Rabhas of Dooars refer to themselves as Rabha, but some of them often declare themselves as Kocha. The Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India provides measures of autonomy and self-governance to the Scheduled Tribes in the hill regions of Northeast India. Overview During the British Raj, the frontier regions of the Assam province populated by tribal communities were designated as "excluded areas" or "partially excluded areas". The North-East Frontier Tracts (present-day Arunachal Pradesh), the Naga Hills district (present-day Nagaland) and the Lushai Hills district (present-day Mizoram) were designated as "excluded areas", while the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region (in present-day Meghalaya) was designated as a "partially excluded area". Himanta Biswa Sarma
Himanta Biswa Sarma (born 1 February 1969) is an Indian politician and lawyer serving as the 15th and current Chief Minister of Assam since 2021. A former member of the Indian National Congress, Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015 and soon was made convenor of NEDA. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having been elected since 2001. Early life and education Sarma was born on 1 February 1969 in Jorhat, Assam, the family, including six siblings, later shifted to Ulubari, Gandhibasti in Guwahati.
