Radial Keratotomy
Radial keratotomy (RK) is a refractive surgery, refractive surgical procedure to correct myopia (nearsightedness). It was developed in 1974 by Svyatoslav Fyodorov, a Russian Ophthalmology, ophthalmologist. It has been largely supplanted by newer, more accurate operations, such as photorefractive keratectomy, LASIK, Epi-LASIK and the Intraocular lens#Intraocular lenses for correcting refractive errors, phakic intraocular lens. Procedure When performing RK, incisions are made with a diamond knife. The incisions relax the steep central cornea in patients with myopia in order to achieve a decreased need for correction. The original technique – consisting of incisions from periphery to center – was called the "Russian technique", while the later advances of performing controlled incision from center to periphery was called the "American technique".Gulani AC, Fyodorov S: Future Directions in Vision course, June 1997 RK may be performed with different types, numbers, and patterns of ...

Rhodopsin Kinase
Rhodopsin kinase (, ''rod opsin kinase'', ''G-protein-coupled receptor kinase 1'', ''GPCR kinase 1'', ''GRK1'', ''opsin kinase'', ''opsin kinase (phosphorylating)'', ''rhodopsin kinase (phosphorylating)'', ''RK'', ''STK14'') is a serine/threonine-specific protein kinase involved in phototransduction. This enzyme catalyses the following chemical reaction: : ATP + rhodopsin \rightleftharpoons ADP + phospho-rhodopsin Mutations in rhodopsin kinase are associated with a form of night blindness called Oguchi disease. Function and mechanism of action Rhodopsin kinase is a member of the family of G protein-coupled receptor kinases, and is officially named G protein-coupled receptor kinase 1, or GRK1. Rhodopsin kinase is found primarily in mammalian retinal rod cells, where it phosphorylates light-activated rhodopsin, a member of the family of G protein-coupled receptors that recognizes light. Phosphorylated, light-activated rhodopsin binds to the protein arrestin to terminate t ...

R/K Selection Theory
In ecology, selection theory relates to the selection of combinations of traits in an organism that trade off between quantity and quality of offspring. The focus on either an increased quantity of offspring at the expense of reduced individual parental investment of -strategists, or on a reduced quantity of offspring with a corresponding increased parental investment of -strategists, varies widely, seemingly to promote success in particular environments. The concepts of quantity or quality offspring are sometimes referred to as "cheap" or "expensive", a comment on the expendable nature of the offspring and parental commitment made. The stability of the environment can predict if many expendable offspring are made or if fewer offspring of higher quality would lead to higher reproductive success. An unstable environment would encourage the parent to make many offspring, because the likelihood of all (or the majority) of them surviving to adulthood is slim. In contrast, more stab ...

Runge–Kutta Methods
In numerical analysis, the Runge–Kutta methods ( ) are a family of Explicit and implicit methods, implicit and explicit iterative methods, List of Runge–Kutta methods, which include the Euler method, used in temporal discretization for the approximate solutions of simultaneous nonlinear equations. These methods were developed around 1900 by the German mathematicians Carl Runge and Wilhelm Kutta. The Runge–Kutta method The most widely known member of the Runge–Kutta family is generally referred to as "RK4", the "classic Runge–Kutta method" or simply as "the Runge–Kutta method". Let an initial value problem be specified as follows: : \frac = f(t, y), \quad y(t_0) = y_0. Here y is an unknown function (scalar or vector) of time t, which we would like to approximate; we are told that \frac, the rate at which y changes, is a function of t and of y itself. At the initial time t_0 the corresponding y value is y_0. The function f and the initial conditions t_0, y_0 are ...

Raising Kaine
Raising Kaine (RK) was a leading liberal political blog in Virginia. It functioned as a group blog and community forum for Virginia netroots activists, primarily directed toward helping to elect Democrats and other liberals and progressives in Virginia and nationally. The blog is now defunct. RK was a popular example of a collaborative blog, offering comment and diary posting privileges to its visitors. Lowell Feld and Eric Grim founded it in January 2005, initially to help "raise" Democratic Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine to the governorship in the 2005 Virginia gubernatorial election. (The term " raising Cain" is idiomatic for causing trouble.) RK also aimed to help elect other Democrats in Virginia, while promoting progressive causes and values. At its peak, RK had an average monthly traffic of about 80,000–100,000 visits. As with many leading state and local blogs, RK ran on the SoapBlox software. The blog ceased operations in late 2008, but its content remained ar ...

Reichskommissariat
() is a German word for a type of administrative entity headed by a government official known as a '' Reichskommissar'' (). Although many offices existed, primarily throughout the Imperial German and Nazi periods in a number of fields (ranging from public infrastructure and spatial planning to ethnic cleansing), it is most commonly used to refer to the quasi-colonial administrative territorial entity established by Nazi Germany in several occupied countries during World War II. While officially located outside the German Reich in a legal sense, these entities were directly controlled by their supreme civil authorities (the ''Reichskommissars''), who ruled their territories as German governors on behalf of and as representatives of Adolf Hitler. The introduction of these territorial administrations served a number of purposes. Those established or planned to be established in Western and Northern Europe were in general envisioned as the transitional phases for the incorpo ...
