RFL Lancashire Cup
The RFL Lancashire Cup, usually referred to as the Lancashire Cup, was a British rugby league, rugby league football knock-out competition founded in 1905. Organised by the Rugby Football League (RFL), the competition was open to all professional clubs in the Lancashire region, but also included a number of clubs based in Cumbria. The tournament was held annually and was usually played over four rounds, with the fixtures normally being played during the early part of the season. The tournament was scrapped along with the RFL Yorkshire Cup, Yorkshire Cup after the 1992–93 Rugby Football League season, 1992–93 season. The most successful club was Wigan Warriors, Wigan, who won the trophy on 21 occasions. History The competition was introduced in 1905. Wigan Warriors
The Wigan Warriors is an English professional rugby league club based in Wigan, Greater Manchester. The club competes in the Super League, the top tier of the British rugby league system. Formed in 1872, the club is a founding member of the Rugby Football League, Northern Rugby Football Union following the schism in 1895. The club is currently the most successful club in the history of the sport, having won 163 trophies in total (8 of these were won prior to the formation of the Rugby Football League, Northern Rugby Football Union). Warrington Wolves
Warrington Wolves are a professional rugby league club based in Warrington, England. They play home games at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and compete in Super League, the top tier of British rugby league system, British rugby league. Warrington are the only British-based club to have played every season in the top flight. The Willows, Salford
The Willows was a rugby league stadium in Weaste, City of Salford, Salford, England. It had a final capacity of 11,363 with 2,500 seats. History In 1900, Salford agreed a 14-year lease on of land belonging to the Willows Estate Company, named after the abundance of willow trees in the area. They made their debut at the Willows on 21 December 1901, beating Swinton Lions, Swinton 2–0 in front of 16,981 fans. In the 1960s, the terrace was flattened at the Willows Road end to make way for the Salford Football and Social Club which was officially opened on 16 June 1966. The Willows switched on its floodlights for the first time in the match with Widnes Vikings, Widnes on Friday 11 March 1966. Rochdale Hornets
The Rochdale Hornets are a professional rugby league club from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England, competing in the League 1, the third tier of European rugby league. The Rochdale Hornets are one of the original twenty-two rugby clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, making them one of the world's first rugby league clubs. The winners of the trophy, for the first time, were Rochdale Hornets who beat local rivals Oldham in the final at Wheater's Field, Broughton, Salford, by a score of 12–5. Swinton Lions
The Swinton Lions are a professional rugby league club based in Swinton, Greater Manchester, England, which competes in the RFL League 1 . The club has won the Rugby Football League Championship, Championship six times and three Challenge Cups. Before 1996, the club was known simply as Swinton RLFC. History Early years The club was formed in 1866 when members of Swinton Cricket Club decided to take up Rugby football in the winter to keep fit. Other than an annual challenge against the local Lancashire Rifle Volunteers from 1869, the only games played were amongst the club's own membership. 1908–09 Lancashire Cup
The 1908–09 Lancashire Cup was the fourth year for this regional rugby league competition and saw a final between two previous cup winners. The cup was won by Wigan who beat Oldham in the final at Wheater's Field, Broughton, Salford, by a score of 10–9. The attendance for the final was 20,000 and receipts £600. First round With 12 clubs in the competition, the first round was arranged to draw eight teams in four fixtures with the remaining four teams receiving a bye to the second round. The draw was made in July 1908 and resulted in Barrow, Leigh, Rochdale Hornets and Swinton having a bye. The four ties were all played on 7 November 1908. A replay for the Broughton Rangers and Runcorn fixture was played on Monday 9 November at Broughton's Wheater's Field and ended in an 8-all draw. Athletic Grounds, Rochdale
The Athletic Grounds was a stadium in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. It was the home of Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Football Club for over 90 years until 1988. It has also been used for speedway, BriSCA F1 Stock Cars and greyhound racing. Origins The Athletic Grounds east of Rochdale opened in 1894 and the new stadium soon became the home of the Rochdale Hornets rugby league club. Situated alongside the Oldham & Rochdale branch railway on its south side the stadium could be accessed from Milnrow Road.
