Queluz Palace
The Palace of Queluz ( pt, Palácio de Queluz, ) is an 18th-century palace located at Queluz, a city of the Sintra Municipality, in the Lisbon District, on the Portuguese Riviera. One of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe,Lowndes, p. 179. the palace was conceived as a summer retreat for Dom Pedro of Braganza, later to become husband and then king consort to his own niece, Queen Maria I. Portuguese Riviera
The Portuguese Riviera (Portuguese: '' Riviera Portuguesa'') is a term used in the tourist industry for the affluent coastal region to the west of Lisbon, Portugal, centered on the coastal municipalities of Cascais (including Estoril), Oeiras and Sintra. It is coterminous with the Estoril Coast (''Costa do Estoril'') and occasionally known as the Costa do Sol (''Sun Coast''). Queluz had a population 78,273 inhabitants in 2001. History The origin of the name ''Queluz'' has been disputed over time. However, another suggestion, has it as forming from the ''Mountain of Light'', Monte Abraão (the ''Mount of Abraham''), where worship of the sun was common. Human occupation of theis area dates back to the Late Neolithic or early Chalcolithic (between the third and fourth millennium B.C.), ...
