Quakenbrück (Northern Low Saxon: ''Quokenbrügge'') is a town in the Osnabrück (district), district of Osnabrück, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Hase. It is part of the ''Samtgemeinde'' ("collective municipality") of Artland. History Quakenbrück was founded in 1234 by the Bishop of Osnabrück, according to the earliest documents, although the area had been settled previously. It served as a border to the north of Osnabrück. On 29 May 1916, a Nail Men, nail man made from French Populus, poplar was given to the town by Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer-Lieser and placed in the meeting room of the town hall. Revenue from the statue, which depicted a 13th-14th-century knight clad in armor and holding a shield and a sword and has come to be known as the Quakenbrück iron Knight (''Quakenbrücker Eiserner Burgmann''), were used to fuel the war effort. Artland Dragons
QTSV Quakenbrück, representing its professional team as Artland Dragons, is a basketball club based in Quakenbrück, Germany. Their home arena was the Artland Arena, which has room for 3,000 spectators. From 2003 till 2015 the club played in the Basketball Bundesliga and in several European competitions. On May 3, 2015, the team announced that it would fold. Ultimately, the management decided to continue operations in the third tier Bundesliga ProB. History Basketball has a long tradition in Quakenbrück. It was first played in the Artland-Gymnasium school. The basketball section of the sports club QTSV Quakenbrück was established in 1955. In the 1970s, the first men's team got their first achievement, by being promoted to the second German League, where they stayed for three seasons. Claus Peter Poppe
Claus Peter Poppe (born 1 March 1948) is a German politician, representative of the Social Democratic Party. Politics Since 1975, Poppe has been a member of the SPD. From 1976 to 1996 he was a councillor of the city of Lohne, most recently as chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the city. From 1986 to 1996 he was elected to represent Vechta District. Poppe was elected to the Lower Saxony Landtag in 2003 (the 15th Legislature of Lower Saxony). He was re-elected into MdL office in 2008 and 2013. Justus Haucap (born in Quakenbrück on March 24, 1969) is a German economist who currently works as Professor of Economics at the University of Düsseldorf, where he directs the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE). The focus of his research is on competition and antitrust as well as the regulation of network industries and the digital economy. In 2015, Haucap was awarded the Gustav Stolper Prize for his contributions to competition policy in Germany. Enno Patalas
Enno Patalas (15 October 1929, in Quakenbrück – 7 August 2018, in Munich) was a German film historian, collector, and expert film preservationist. A former head of the Munich Film Museum (1973–1994), his restorations include films such as ''Metropolis'', '' M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder'' and ''Die Nibelungen'', all directed by Fritz Lang. Patalas also restored the film ''The Battleship Potemkin'' for viewing at the Berlin Film Festival in 2005. Clemens Freiherr Von Schorlemer-Lieser
Clemens August von Schorlemer-Lieser (29 September 1856 – 6 July 1922) was a German politician. Historical background Freiherr von Schorlemer was born in Horstmar. After he graduated from the Gymnasium Dionysianum in Rheine in 1874, he studied law in Würzburg and Göttingen. In 1878 he achieved his doctorate and went into military service. In 1880 he married the wealthy Mary Puricelli, who later inherited millions in assets. Together they bought a vineyard in the Mosel at Lieser. There they built a castle, Schloss Lieser. In 1886 Schorlemer gained administrative experience with the prosecuting authorities in Bonn and Düsseldorf. From 1886 to 1888, he was a ''Regierungsassessor ''in Magdeburg. Christian Brand (born 23 May 1972) is a German football coach and former player who coaches Werder Bremen youth teams. Playing career A midfielder, Brand began his career at VfB Oldenburg and made his debut for the club on 27 August 1991 in a match against FC St. Pauli. Dietrich Hermann Hegewisch (15 December 1746 – 4 April 1812) was a German historian who was a native of Quakenbrück. He was the father of political publicist Franz Hermann Hegewisch (1783-1865). Hegewisch studied theology and history at the University of Göttingen. Following graduation he was a private tutor, then later worked as a newspaper editor in Hamburg. From 1782 to 1812 he was a full professor of history at the University of Kiel. In 1805 he was appointed ''Etatsrat'' by the Danish monarchy. Nail Men or Men of Nails (german: Nagelmänner) were a form of propaganda and fundraising for members of the armed forces and their dependents in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the German Empire in World War I. They consisted of wooden statues (usually of knights in armour) into which nails were driven, either iron (black), or coloured silver or gold, in exchange for donations of different amounts. Some took different forms, including pillars, shields or local coats of arms and crosses, especially the Iron Cross, and in German there are a variety of alternate names for them, including ''Wehrmann in Eisen'' or ''eiserner Wehrmann'' (Iron Guardian), ''Nagelfigur'', ''Nagelbild'' or ''Nagelbrett'' (Nail Figure or Nail Board), ''Wehrschild'' (Defence Shield) and ''Kriegswahrzeichen'' (War Monument).
