Quakake Tunnel
The Quakake Tunnel (also known as the Meadow Tunnel or the Beaver Meadow Tunnel) is a mine drainage tunnel in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. The tunnel is several thousand feet long and has a discharge of thousands of gallons per minute. It was the subject of an Operation Scarlift report. The tunnel is a major contributor of acid mine drainage to the watershed of the Lehigh River. Description The Quakake Tunnel is located in Packer Township near the border between Carbon and Luzerne counties. The tunnel is located to the south of the borough of Beaver Meadows. It is approximately in length. The mouth of the tunnel is at Wetzel Creek and its waters ultimately enter the Delaware River. The tunnel's direction is mainly north and 60 degrees west and the other end of the tunnel is in coal mine workings belonging to the Lykens Vein. Packer Township is a township in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. It is part of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The population was 998 at the 2010 census. Hazle Creek is a tributary source stream of the Lehigh and Delaware Rivers, via Black Creek, Carbon County, which originates in southern Luzerne County on the east side of the saddle of an important mountain pass hosting a transportation infrastructure corridor. The creek's source area is located within the east-side neighborhoods of Hazleton, Pennsylvania. In structural geology, an anticline is a type of fold that is an arch-like shape and has its oldest beds at its core, whereas a syncline is the inverse of an anticline. In structural geology, a syncline is a fold with younger layers closer to the center of the structure, whereas an anticline is the inverse of a syncline.
