Quitting
''Quitting'' () is a 2001 Chinese drama (film and television), drama film directed by Zhang Yang (director), Zhang Yang, starring and based on the true life story of Jia Hongsheng. Jia, an actor and former drug addiction, drug addict, battled his addiction to marijuana and heroin for five years from 1992 to 1997. All members of the cast, from Jia and Jia's family members right down to the doctors and patients at a mental institute Jia was admitted to, are real people playing themselves. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on 4 September 2001 and clinched the NETPAC, NETPAC Award. The original Chinese title is an allusion to the The Beatles, Beatles' 1965 classic song "Yesterday (Beatles song), Yesterday". References to The Beatles, of whom Jia was an avid fan, are also made throughout the film. Jia Hongsheng
Jia Hongsheng (; 19 March 1967 – 5 July 2010) was a Chinese actor who became known in the late 1980s and early 1990s for roles in movies like ''The Case of the Silver Snake'' (1988), ''Good Morning, Beijing'' (1991), ''A Woman from North Shaanxi'' (1993) and ''Weekend Lover'' (1995). His performances were praised by critics and he developed a rebellious image that made him popular among artistic youth and the " Sixth Generation" of Chinese directors. However, he backed away from the limelight in 1995 after becoming addicted to cannabis and eventually heroin. His father, head of the local theatre in Jilin, retired two years before his retirement age, and along with his wife moved to Beijing to try to help Jia. Peter Loehr is an American film producer and executive who spent the bulk of his career in Asia. After getting his start in Japan and Taiwan, Loehr started China's first independent film company, Imar Film Co. in 1996. As a producer Loehr was notable for not only producing films, but for being the first to market and distribute movies in house. Through Imar, Loehr produced five independent films in China: Spicy Love Soup, A Beautiful New World, Shower, "All the Way" and "Quitting". These films went on to box office success in China with "Spicy Love Soup" winning many domestic awards. Zhang Yang (; born 1967) is a Chinese film director, screenwriter, and occasional actor. He is the son of film director Zhang Huaxun. Zhang grew up in Beijing and studied until 1988 at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong, from which he graduated with a degree in Chinese literature. He then went to the Central Academy of Drama, graduating in 1992. Career Zhang Yang uses a realistic style and achieved great recognition for his 1999 independent production ''Shower (film), Xizao'' (; English translation: ''Shower''), which was successful at Chinese box offices and international film festivals. Tang Dynasty () is a Chinese rock music, rock band formed in 1989. They are often credited as being the first Chinese heavy metal band and the first folk metal band of Asian style as well. Biography Singer and rhythm guitarist Ding Wu, bassist Zhang Ju (musician), Zhang Ju, and Chinese-American guitarist Kaiser Kuo co-founded Tang Dynasty in early 1989. Kuo left shortly after to return to the United States, with Liu Yijun (guitarist), Liu "Lao Wu" Yijun took his place. According to Kaiser, went on to become China's first "guitar hero." In 1990 the band participated in the Chinese modern rock concert, where they performed early versions of two of their eventual songs. Dou Wei (born October 14, 1969) is a Chinese musician, singer-songwriter, composer and music producer. He is a representative figure in Chinese rock music.
