Queen Street is a street in Fremantle, Western Australia that crosses High Street, Fremantle, High Street at Kings Square, Fremantle, Kings Square, and is located away from and west of Queens Square, Fremantle, Queens Square. It is a separate street from Queen Victoria Street, Fremantle, Queen Victoria Street, which is located further north. The street is named after Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, Queen Adelaide, consort of William IV. It starts from near the Fremantle railway station and crosses Cantonment Street, Adelaide Street, Fremantle, Adelaide Street, High Street and finishes as a junction with Henderson and Holdsworth streets. Its extension in the 1920s was to facilitate improvements in road and tram routes. Queen Street was the address of the 7th Heavy Brigade artillery, and 35th Fortress Company of Engineers prior to the Second World War. High Street is the main street running through the City of Fremantle, Western Australia. The street passes by historic landmarks, including the Round House (Western Australia), Round House, the Fremantle Town Hall, and the Fremantle War Memorial, through the Fremantle West End Heritage area and through two town squares. Trams operated along High Street for 47 years, between 1905 and 1952. Queens Square, also known as Queen's Square, is a town square in Fremantle, Western Australia. It is located at the intersection of High Street and Parry Street, both of which bisect the square. The square was originally a single space, but was divided into four sections due to the extensions of High and Parry Streets, completed in 1886. Today Queens Square still functions as a public open space for residents of Fremantle. History The square began as an open space on John Septimus Roe's original town plan of Fremantle, drawn in 1883. In 1866, the Fremantle City Council decided that the extension of High Street should proceed through Queens Square, rather than around it. Queen Victoria Street, Fremantle
Queen Victoria Street is the main road entering the city centre of Fremantle, Western Australia, from the direction of Perth. The road was originally named Cantonment Road, but was subsequently renamed Victoria Road, and a few years later Queen Victoria Street, after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, to avoid confusion with similarly named roads in the area. Due to its proximity to Fremantle Harbour it has at times had very heavy traffic. William IV
William IV (William Henry; 21 August 1765 – 20 June 1837) was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and King of Hanover from 26 June 1830 until his death in 1837. Fremantle Railway Station
Fremantle railway station is the terminus of Transperth's Fremantle line in Western Australia. History The original Fremantle station opened in Cliff Street on 1 March 1881 as the terminus of the Eastern Railway to Guildford via Perth. As the Eastern Railway was extended, its importance grew. It became an important hub for gold miners arriving in Western Australia via ship and then travelling to the Yilgarn and Eastern Goldfields when the line opened to Kalgoorlie in 1896. In 1907, a new station and marshalling yards were established 300 metres to the north-east on the site of the former Fremantle Railway Workshops to better service the newly constructed Fremantle Harbour. The station was designed by William Dartnall, Chief Engineer of Existing Lines of the Railway Department in 1905.
