Q School 2022 – Event 1
The 2022 Q School was a series of five snooker tournaments held at the start of the 2022–23 snooker season. An event for amateur players, it served as a qualification event for a place on the professional World Snooker Tour for the following two seasons. The events took place in May and June 2022 at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, England and also at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club in Bangkok, Thailand with a total 16 players qualifying via the five tournaments. The three events held in England were organised by the World Snooker Tour, whilst those in Thailand were organised by the Billiard Sports Association of Thailand. Format The 2022 Q School consisted of five events, three held in the UK and two "Asia-Oceania" events held in Thailand. Q School (snooker)
The Q School is an amateur snooker competition which serves as the qualification school for the World Snooker Tour. Overview Q School is established in 2011 as an attempt to streamline the qualification process and is held annually before the start of the professional season, where amateurs and ex-professionals who dropped out of the top 64 in Snooker world rankings, world rankings in previous seasons can compete for a two-year tour card to play on the Main Tour. It replaced the amateur tournament International Open Series, the former second-tier snooker series organised by the English Association of Snooker and Billiards (EASB). In 2022, a Q School branch in Bangkok was established for entrants from the Asia-Oceania region. 2 qualifying places were awarded to the winners whilst discontinuing qualification through Standings (sports), Order of Merit in Q School Europe. Zak Surety
Zak Surety (born 4 October 1991) is an English professional snooker player. He practises frequently with Stuart Bingham and Allan Taylor. Career As an amateur, Surety based in Basildon entered in Players Tour Championship events from their establishment in 2010, with his best result as an amateur being a run to the last 32 stages of the 2012 UKPTC 3, with wins over Jack Lisowski and Oliver Lines in the main stages. Surety also entered Q School in 2011, 2012 and 2013 in the hope of winning a place on the main tour; however, he was unsuccessful, but came close in the second event in 2013, losing 4–1 to Ryan Clark in the final stage. His Q School performances however won him a top up place in four professional ranking events in 2013–14, but he failed to qualify for all four, winning only one match, 5–4 over Patrick Einsle in the 2013 Australian Goldfields Open. Muhammad Asif (snooker Player)
Muhammad Asif () is a Pakistani former professional snooker player. He is a three-time winner of the amateur IBSF World Snooker Championship. He turned professional in 2022. Career In December 2012, Asif won the IBSF World Snooker Championship held in Sofia, Bulgaria, by defeating England's Gary Wilson 10–8. In August 2017, Asif and Babar Masih representing Pakistan-2 defeated Muhammad Sajjad and Asjad Iqbal representing Pakistan-1 to win the IBSF World 6-Red Team Championship. In September 2018, Asif along with Babar Masih won the Asian Team Snooker Championship held in Doha, Qatar, by defeating India's Pankaj Advani and Malkeet Singh 3–2 in the final. Michael Holt (snooker Player)
Michael Holt (born 7 August 1978) is an English professional snooker player from Nottingham. A former world Top 20 player, he won one ranking event – the 2020 Snooker Shoot Out – and two minor-ranking tournaments. He was runner-up at two ranking events – the 2016 Riga Masters and the 2019 Snooker Shoot Out. Holt also reached the semi-finals of the 2013 Shanghai Masters as well as five other quarter-finals. Career 2001–2010 Holt lost in the final qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship in 2001 and 2002. Haydon Pinhey
Haydon Pinhey is an English professional snooker player from Devon. He has earned a two-year card on the World Snooker Tour starting with the 2024–25 snooker season. Early life From Plymouth, Devon. Pinhey attended Sir John Hunt Community Sports College and worked at the Plaza Snooker Club on the Barbican of his home town. Currently Pinhey works and plays for the Legends Lounge within St Budeaux. Ross Muir
Ross Muir (born 6 October 1995 in Edinburgh) is a Scottish professional snooker player. He turned professional in 2013 after graduating from event two of Q School, defeating David Morris 4–0 in the final round. Career Junior career Muir had a very successful junior career, winning many titles including the prestigious televised Junior Pot Black at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield by defeating Jak Jones in the final, the under 14 section of the Lt. James Cahill (snooker Player)
James Cahill (born 27 December 1995) is an English former professional snooker player from Blackpool. Cahill first turned professional in 2013, aged 17, after winning the EBSA European Under-21 Snooker Championships, European Under 21 Championships, but returned to amateur status in 2017. As an amateur, Cahill reached the main stage of the 2019 World Snooker Championship, becoming the first amateur player ever to qualify for the event. At the tournament, he defeated world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan 10–8 in their first round match. O'Sullivan was the second former world number one Cahill had defeated in the 2018–19 snooker season, after his victory over Mark Selby at the 2018 UK Championship. John Astley (snooker Player)
John J. Astley (born 13 January 1989) is an English former professional snooker player from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Career Early career Astley first came into prominence in 2007 by winning the national Under-19 title (defeating Michael Georgiou in the final), however wins in the amateur PIOS tournaments proved hard to come by. His attempts to qualify for the main tour via Q School in 2011 and 2012 were unsuccessful as well. Nevertheless, Astley gained enough sponsorship to be able to enter all the PTC events in the 2012–13 season as an amateur. Lukas Kleckers
Lukas Kleckers (born 18 May 1996 in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a German former professional snooker player. Career Kleckers first drew attention in 2013 when, at the age of 17, he captured the highest ranking and most prestigious amateur event in Germany by defeating Roman Dietzel 4–2 in the final of the German Amateur Championship. Steven Hallworth
Steven Hallworth (born 1 December 1995) is an English professional snooker player. He is the only ever qualified professional from Lincoln. He is a practice partner of Stuart Carrington. Career Junior Hallworth started playing snooker aged 10 after trying pool on a family holiday. He then found success in junior and amateur levels and was given the opportunity to play future World Champion Mark Selby aged 12 in 2009, after winning that year's Under-17 Lincoln and District Billiards and Snooker Association crown. Zhao Jianbo
Zhao Jianbo (, born 27 August 2003) is a Chinese former professional snooker player. The WPBSA suspended Zhao from World Snooker Tour events in January 2023, amid a match-fixing investigation, and subsequently charged him with fixing a match. Following an independent disciplinary tribunal, Zhao was banned from professional competition for 2 years and 4 months, until 7 April 2025, and ordered to pay £7500 in costs. Ben Mertens
Ben Mertens (born 13 October 2004) is a Belgian professional snooker player. He won the World Open Under-16 Snooker Championships in 2018. Career Ben Mertens is from Wetteren. When he was 12 years old, he reached the 2nd round of the 2017 EBSA European Under-18 Snooker Championship.
