Portland Roads, Queensland
Portland Road is a town in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. The town is within the locality of Iron Range. History The town takes its name from the Portland Road harbour (). The harbour, in turn, is named after William Henry Cavendish, Duke of Portland. The name first appears on an 1897 chart published by the British Admiralty. Portland Road was previously the port and support centre for Iron Range. In World War II, Portland Road became an airstrip and staging post. The Shire of Cook (The Shire) is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Australia. The Shire covers most of the eastern and central parts of Cape York Peninsula, the most northerly section of the Australian mainland. It covers an area of , and is the largest LGA in the state. Iron Range is a coastal locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. In the , Iron Range had a population of 14 people. The town of Portland Road is on a north-east headland in the locality (). Geography Iron Range is on the north-east coast of the Cape York Peninsula. William Henry Cavendish
William Henry Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 4th Duke of Portland, (24 June 1768 – 27 March 1854), styled Marquess of Titchfield until 1809, was a British politician who served in various positions in the governments of George Canning and Lord Goderich. Background and education Portland was the eldest son of Prime Minister William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland and Lady Dorothy, daughter of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire and Charlotte Boyle, Baroness Clifford. He was the elder brother of Lord William Bentinck and Lord Charles Bentinck.
