Pope County, Arkansas
Pope County is a county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 63,381. The county seat is Russellville. The county was formed on November 2, 1829, from a portion of Crawford County and named for John Pope, the third governor of the Arkansas Territory. It is an alcohol prohibition or dry county. Pope County is part of the Russellville, Arkansas, Micropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Pope and Yell County. History Civil War and Reconstruction A large Democratic majority was ardently split into a "town or country" dichotomy at the local level. Further, the county was split between Union and Confederate sympathizers, with deep grudges held by both sides for grievances committed during the opposite's rule during the war. John Pope (Kentucky Politician)
John Pope (February 1770 – July 12, 1845) was a United States Senator from Kentucky, a member of the United States House of Representatives from Kentucky, Secretary of State of Kentucky, and the third Governor of Arkansas Territory. Early life and education Pope was born near Bristow in Prince William County, Virginia in 1770, the first son of the former Penelope Sanford Edwards (1757-) and her husband Col. William H. Pope (1740-1825). He had younger brothers William H. Pope Jr (1775-1844) who was born as the family continued moving westward into Fauquier County, Virginia, as well as Alexander Pope (1781-1826) and Nathaniel Pope (1784-1850), both of whom were born as the family moved to Louisville in what was then Kentucky County, Virginia. Arkansas Highway 7
Highway 7 (AR 7, Ark. 7, Hwy. 7, and partially Scenic 7 Byway) is a north–south state highway that runs across the state of Arkansas. As Arkansas's longest state highway, the route runs from Louisiana Highway 558 at the Louisiana state line north to Bull Shoals Lake at Diamond City near the Missouri state line. With the exception of the segment north of Harrison, Highway 7 has been designated as an Arkansas Scenic Byway and a National Forest Scenic Byway. The road passes through the heart of both the Ozark Mountains and the Ouachita Mountains, and features scenic views. It's the route favored by motorcycle riders touring the region. Arkansas Highway 124 is a designation for two state highways in Central Arkansas. The western segment of runs from Russellville to Rose Bud.
