Polemoniaceae
The Polemoniaceae (Jacob's-ladder or phlox family) are a family of flowering plants consisting of about 25 genera with 270–400 species of annuals and perennials native to the Northern Hemisphere and South America, with the center of diversity in western North America. Only one genus (''Polemonium'') is found in Europe, and two (''Phlox'' and ''Polemonium'') in Asia, where they are confined to cool temperate to arctic regions; both genera also occur more widely in North America, suggesting relatively recent colonization of the Old World from North America. The family can be distinguished from most other eudicot families by the ovary made up of three fused carpels (usually with three chambers, but with one chamber in some species). The members of the family have five sepals, five petals fused, and five stamens that alternate with the lobes of the corolla. For decades, most sources used a classification of the family published by Grant in 1959, but new evidence, including mol ...

Acanthogilia
''Acanthogilia'' is a genus with a single species of desert shrub from Baja California, Mexico. It was first scientifically described as a genus in 1986. Classification Its closest relatives within the family Polemoniaceae are not clear. Some evidence suggests it was first to diverge from the ancestral member of that family, some puts it in a group with ''Bonplandia'', ''Cobaea'', and ''Cantua ''Cantua'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Polemoniaceae which is in the order Ericales. Saltugilia
''Saltugilia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the phlox family, Polemoniaceae. They are known commonly as woodland gilias.Porter, J. M. and L. A. Johnson. (2000)A phylogenetic classification of Polemoniaceae. ''Aliso'' 19(1) 55-91. There are four species. Two are endemic to California in the United States, and the distributions of the other two extend into Baja California in Mexico. This genus was erected in the year 2000 to segregate three species from the genus ''Gilia'' on the basis of phylogenetic evidence. Analysis of DNA was used in the formation of the new taxon, and studies of other characteristics of the plants, such as morphological, palynological, and ecological traits, were considered. ''Saltugilia'' was a section of genus ''Gilia''. These three species were classified in the new genus ''Saltugilia'', and the fourth was newly described to science in 2001.Weese, T. L. and L. A. Microsteris
''Microsteris'' is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the phlox family containing the single species ''Microsteris gracilis'', known by the common name slender phlox. The segregation of this species into a genus of its own is controversial, and many botanists continue to include the plant in genus ''Phlox''. Genetic analysis is continuing. Distribution ''Microsteris gracilis'' is native to western North America from northwestern Canada to the American Midwest and West Coast, through Mexico, as well as parts of South America. It is native to all the diverse plant communities in California. Description ''Microsteris gracilis'' is an annual herb which is variable in shape, taking a decumbent, branching, sometimes almost tuftlike form or growing erect and very slender. Its maximum height approaches 20 centimeters, but it may be much smaller. The lance-shaped leaves are 1 to 3 centimeters long and oppositely arranged except for the upper ones, which are alternate. The herba ...

Langloisia
''Langloisia setosissima'', the bristly langloisia, bristly-calico, Great Basin langloisia or lilac sunbonnets, is a flowering plant, the sole species in the genus ''Langloisia'' in the family Polemoniaceae. It is native to the western United States and north western Mexico, where it is found in desert washes and on rocky slopes and plains from eastern Oregon and Idaho, south via Nevada and Utah to eastern California and Arizona. The genus name of ''Langloisia'' is in honour of Auguste Berthélemy Langlois (1832–1900), who was a French-born American clergyman and botanist. It is an annual plant, growing to 4–20 cm tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, linear, 2–3 cm long, densely bristly and with a toothed margin. The flowers are white to light blue or pale purple in color, 1.5–2 cm diameter, with a deeply five-lobed corolla. There are two subspecies In biological classification, subspecies is a rank below species, used for populations that li ...
