Playground Psychotics
''Playground Psychotics'' is a two-CD live album by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. It was originally released in 1992 through his mail order label, Barking Pumpkin, and was re-released in 1995 through Rykodisc. The album features recordings of Zappa and his band, the Mothers of Invention, around the time of the film '' 200 Motels''. The live material on ''Playground Psychotics'' is interspersed with excerpts from taped conversations among band members whilst on tour, and the release includes three conceptual sections: ''A Typical Day on the Road, Part 1'', a collage of dialogue which opens the first disc; ''A Typical Day on the Road, Part 2'', which opens the second disc and ''The True Story of 200 Motels'', which appears at the end of disc two. Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American musician, composer, and bandleader. Yoko Ono
Yoko Ono ( ; ja, 小野 洋子, Ono Yōko, usually spelled in katakana ; born February 18, 1933) is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer, songwriter, and peace activist. Her work also encompasses performance art and filmmaking. Ono grew up in Tokyo and moved to New York City in 1953 with her family. She became involved with New York City's downtown artists scene in the early 1960s, which included the Fluxus group, and became well known in 1969 when she married English musician John Lennon of the Beatles. The couple used their honeymoon as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War. She and Lennon remained married until he was murdered in front of the couple's apartment building, the Dakota, on 8 December 1980. Together they had one son, Sean, who later also became a musician. Billy The Mountain
"Billy the Mountain" is a Frank Zappa song first made available on the album ''Just Another Band from L.A.'' in 1972. The original recording, which took more than a half-hour to perform, was from a live tour performance on August 7, 1971, in Los Angeles, performed by Zappa with his band the Mothers and prominently featured the musical duo Flo & Eddie. The album recording had to be edited in order to fit on one side of the record. An alternate version of the song was featured on the 1992 album ''Playground Psychotics'', and a third version of the song was posthumously released in 2011 by the Zappa Family Trust on the album ''Carnegie Hall''. The song is an intricate and absurd story in a parody of the song/story style of works such as "Peter and the Wolf" about a talking mountain named Billy and his "lovely wife Ethel," "a tree growing off of his shoulder." Mark Volman
Mark Randall Volman (born April 19, 1947) is an American vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, best known as a founding member of the 1960s rock band The Turtles, and, along with his bandmate and friend Howard Kaylan, a member of the 1970s rock duo Flo & Eddie, where he used the pseudonym Flo (abbreviation from Phlorescent Leech). Howard Kaylan (born Howard Lawrence Kaplan, June 22, 1947) is an American musician and songwriter, best known as a founding member and lead singer of the 1960s rock band The Turtles, and, along with bandmate and friend Mark Volman, a member of the 1970s rock duo Flo & Eddie, where he used the pseudonym Eddie. Walter Ward (singer)
Walter Ward (August 28, 1940 – December 11, 2006) was an American R&B singer, and lead vocalist of The Olympics. Ward was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and began singing professionally as a child with his father and three uncles, in a gospel group known as 'The Ward Brothers'. Ward's family moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s. In 1954, when he was attending Centinela High School in Compton, California, Ward and his cousin Eddie Lewis formed a group known as 'The Challengers'. After winning a number of talent shows, Ward and Lewis were approached by another singing duo who asked to join their group. The new quartet became The Olympics. Ward's last performance with The Olympics was on November 12, 2006, at a Doo-Wop Spectacular on Long Island, New York. Ward died in Northridge, California in December 2006, at the age of 66. Jeff Simmons (musician)
Jeffrey Lael Simmons is an American Rock music, rock musician, best known as a former member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Career Simmons provided bass, guitar, vocals and harmonica for Mothers of Invention during 1970 and 1971. He left the Mothers in early 1971 just prior to the filming of ''200 Motels'' (where he was replaced by Ringo Starr's chauffeur Martin Lickert). Simmons later returned to the Mothers occasionally during the period of 1972 to 1974. Zappa and Mothers albums he appeared on include ''Chunga's Revenge'' (1970), ''Waka/Jawaka'' (1972) and ''Roxy & Elsewhere'' (1974). Sofa (Frank Zappa Song)
"Sofa" is a composition by American musician Frank Zappa, released in 1975 on ''One Size Fits All''. In 1993, the year of Zappa's death, Steve Vai covered "Sofa" for Zappa's tribute album ''Zappa's Universe''. The cover won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1994. This was Vai's first of three Grammies. Appearances Originally, "Sofa" was only performed in concert and was part of a longer composition around the Flo and Eddie era of Zappa's music, when Mark Volman pretended to be a sofa. In 1975, Sofa made its first album appearance on Frank Zappa's album ''One Size Fits All'' as an instrumental version and a vocal version ("Sofa No. 1" and "Sofa No. 2"). Ian Robertson Underwood (born May 22, 1939) is a woodwind and keyboards player, known for his work with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Biography Underwood graduated from The Choate School in 1957 and Yale University with a bachelor's degree in composition in 1961 and a master's degree in composition at UC Berkeley in 1966. He began his career by playing San Francisco Bay Area coffeehouses and bars with his improvisational group, the Jazz Mice, in the mid-1960s before he became a member of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention in 1967 for their third studio album, ''We're Only in It for the Money''.
