Pittsburgh Panthers Football
The Pittsburgh Panthers football program is the intercollegiate football team of the University of Pittsburgh, often referred to as "Pitt", in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Traditionally the most popular sport at the university, Pitt football has played at the highest level of American college football competition, now termed the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, since the beginning of the school's official sponsorship of the sport in 1890. Pitt competes as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Pitt claims nine national championships, including two ( 1937, 1976) from major wire-service: AP Poll and Coaches' Poll, and is among the top 20 college football programs in terms of all-time wins. Heather Lyke
Heather Lyke is the athletic director at the University of Pittsburgh. She was previously the athletic director and vice president at Eastern Michigan University, and has also served in administrative roles at Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati. Career During her tenure at Eastern Michigan University, Lyke oversaw significant growth in the school's athletic programs thanks to a 51% increase in athletic donations. This increased funding was used for capital upgrades to athletic facilities. The school won seventeen MAC titles during her tenure. The football team made its first bowl appearance since 1987, with a 20–24 loss to Old Dominion in the 2019 Bahamas Bowl under head coach Chris Creighton. 1910 Pittsburgh Panthers Football Team
The 1910 Pittsburgh Panthers football team was an American football team that represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent during the 1910 college football season. Schedule Season recap After Coach Joe Thompson led the Pitt eleven to a surprising 6–2–1 record in 1909 with only four returning players, the Pitt Athletic Association, students, faculty and fans were looking forward to another successful season in 1910. Captain Homer Roe and Frank Van Doren were the only losses to graduation. All the returning players already knew the Coach Thompson system. The schedule that Graduate Manager Hurst assembled was weaker than previous years as Carlisle, Notre Dame and Bucknell were missing. Hail To Pitt
"Hail to Pitt" is the most traditional fight song of the University of Pittsburgh, which is commonly referred to as Pitt. The saying "Hail to Pitt!" is also the most traditional and commonly used slogan of the University of Pittsburgh and its athletics teams. The slogan is frequently used in promotional material, printed on merchandise and souvenirs. It was also the title of a 1982 history of Pitt athletics by author Jim O'Brien. The slogan is often used among alumni as a statement of affiliation, including as a closing signature in conversation or correspondence between alumni, and is sometime abbreviated as "HTP" or "H2P", the latter of which is a registered trademark of the university and is frequently used on official university signage and merchandise. Tony Dorsett
Anthony Drew Dorsett Sr. (born April 7, 1954) is a former American football running back who played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos. From Western Pennsylvania, Dorsett attended the nearby University of Pittsburgh, where he led the Panthers to the national title as a senior in 1976 and won the Heisman Trophy. He was the first-round draft choice of the Cowboys in 1977, the second overall selection (from Seattle). Dorsett was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and played for the team for 11 seasons, through 1987. He played for Denver the following year, then retired because of injuries. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1994) and the College Football Hall of Fame (1994). The 2021 Pittsburgh Panthers football team represented the University of Pittsburgh in the 2021 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The 2010 Pittsburgh Panthers football team represented the University of Pittsburgh in the 2010 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Panthers were members of the Big East Conference. They were led by the sixth-year head coach Dave Wannstedt and played their home games at Heinz Field. 2010 marked the university's 121st season overall. They finished the season 8–5, 5–2 in Big East play to be champions of the Big East with Connecticut and West Virginia. However, due to losses to both schools, Pitt did not earn the conference's bid to a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game. The 1980 Pittsburgh Panthers football team represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent during the 1980 NCAA Division I-A football season. Despite losing one game, the Panthers were named national champion by NCAA-designated major selectors DeVold System, Football Research, and ''The New York Times'', while also named co-national champion by Rothman (FACT) and Sagarin. The university does not claim a national championship for this season, nor are the Panthers popularly recognized for winning that year's national championship. Pitt was awarded the Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy as the champion of the East. The 1938 Pittsburgh Panthers football team represented the University of Pittsburgh in the 1938 college football season. The team compiled an record in their final season under fifteenth-year head coach Jock Sutherland, and were ranked eighth in the final AP Poll. Schedule Preseason Chancellor John Bowman was not happy that the football team turned down the 1938 Rose Bowl bid and essentially cost the University the $100,000 payday. In February he set in motion the Bowman Plan for athletics at Pitt. The first order of business was to eliminate the Athletic Council and form an all-faculty board in charge of athletics. The 1933 Pittsburgh Panthers football team was an American football team that represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent during the 1933 college football season. In its tenth season under head coach Jock Sutherland, the team compiled an 8–1 record, shut out seven of its nine opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 147 to 13.
