Pinopsida
Conifers are a group of cone-bearing seed plants, a subset of gymnosperms. Scientifically, they make up the division Pinophyta (), also known as Coniferophyta () or Coniferae. The division contains a single extant class, Pinopsida. All extant conifers are perennial woody plants with secondary growth. The great majority are trees, though a few are shrubs. A spermatophyte (; ), also known as phanerogam (taxon Phanerogamae) or phaenogam (taxon Phaenogamae), is any plant that produces seeds, hence the alternative name seed plant. The order Pinales in the division Pinophyta, class Pinopsida, comprises all the extant conifers. The distinguishing characteristic is the reproductive structure known as a cone produced by all Pinales. All of the extant conifers, such as cedar, celery-pine, cypress, fir, juniper, larch, pine, redwood, spruce, yew and ''Araucaria araucana'' ("Monkey tail tree" or "Monkey puzzle tree") are included here. Voltziales is an extinct order of conifers. The group contains the ancestral lineages from which all modern conifer groups emerged. Cheirolepidiaceae
Cheirolepidiaceae is an extinct family of conifers. They first appeared in the Triassic, and were widespread during most of the Mesozoic era. They are united by the possession of a distinctive pollen type assigned to the form genus '' Classopollis''. The name Frenelopsidaceae (as a separate family) or "frenelopsids" has been used for a group of Cheirolepidiaceae with jointed stems, thick internode cuticles, sheathing leaf bases and reduced free leaf tips. Palissyales
Palissyales are an extinct order of conifers, known from the Mesozoic. They are best known from the genus '' Palissya'', which is found in Laurasia and Eastern Gondwana dating from the Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous. The only other confirmed genus of the family, '' Stachyotaxus'' known from the Late Triassic of the Northern Hemisphere. The genus '' Knezourocarpon'' from the Jurassic of Australia has also been tentatively considered a member of the order. Welwitschiaceae is a family of plants of the order Gnetales with one living species, ''Welwitschia mirabilis'', found in southwestern Africa.
