Perth Amboy Terra Cotta Company
Perth Amboy Terra Cotta Company of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was a late-nineteenth- and early twentieth-century brickworks, known for the manufacture of many prominent and unique architectural terracotta elements. The company was famous for the initial manufacture of Tiffany bricks, a speckled light-colored long thin Roman brick. Largely designed by architect Stanford White, they were popularly known as “Tiffany bricks” for their prominent use at Tiffany House (Manhattan) (built 1882–1885, demolished after 1936), on the northwest corner of E72nd Street and Madison Avenue. Perth Amboy was a town familiar with White's partner, Charles Follen McKim, who had gone to school there. White used the manufactured bricks of the firm throughout the 1880s. Architectural terracotta refers to a fired mixture of clay and water that can be used in a non-structural, semi-structural, or structural capacity on the exterior or interior of a building. Terracotta pottery, as earthenware is called when not used for vessels, is an ancient building material that translates from Latin as " baked earth". Some architectural terracotta is actually the stronger stoneware. It can be unglazed, painted, slip glazed, or glazed. Roman brick can refer either to a type of brick used in Ancient Roman architecture and spread by the Romans to the lands they conquered; or to a modern type inspired by the ancient prototypes. Charles Follen McKim
Charles Follen McKim (August 24, 1847 – September 14, 1909) was an American Beaux-Arts architect of the late 19th century. Along with William Rutherford Mead and Stanford White, he provided the architectural expertise as a member of the partnership McKim, Mead & White. Life and career McKim was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. His parents were James Miller McKim, a Presbyterian minister, and Sarah Speakman McKim. They were active abolitionists and he was named after Charles Follen, another abolitionist and a Unitarian minister. After attending Harvard University, he studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before joining the office of Henry Hobson Richardson in 1870. McKim formed his own firm in partnership with William Rutherford Mead, joined in 1877 by fellow Richardson protégé Stanford White. The Atlantic Terra Cotta Company, established in 1846 as A. Hall and Sons Terra Cotta, was founded in Perth Amboy, New Jersey due to Perth Amboy's rich supplies of clay. It was one of the first successful terra cotta companies in the United States. Originally, the company produced porcelain and household wares but transitioned to terra cotta items.
