It was involved in a number of campaigns such as those against aggression by the State of Israel, against the Iraq War, against the use of Shannon Airport by the US military, and against the Republic of Ireland participating in the NATO-linked Western European Union (WEU). It was involved in campaigns against the European Union's EU Battlegroup and European Union treaties which it believed would compromise Irish neutrality such as the Amsterdam Treaty, the Nice Treaty and the Lisbon Treaty. A non-governmental organization (NGO) or non-governmental organisation (see spelling differences) is an organization that generally is formed independent from government. They are typically nonprofit entities, and many of them are active in humanitarianism or the social sciences; they can also include clubs and associations that provide services to their members and others. Surveys indicate that NGOs have a high degree of public trust, which can make them a useful proxy for the concerns of society and stakeholders. However, NGOs can also be lobby groups for corporations, such as the World Economic Forum.
