Pamplemousses
Pamplemousses () is a districts of Mauritius, district of Mauritius, located in the north west of the island, and is one of the most densely populated parts of the island. The name of the district comes from the French language, French word for grapefruits. The district has an area of 178.7 km2 and the population estimate was at 139,966 as of 31 December 2015. Places of interest The district hosts the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, SSR botanical garden, or Jardin Botanique Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, renamed in 1988 in honor of the first prime minister of Mauritius. The garden was first constructed by Pierre Poivre (1719–1786) in 1770. The area is 25 hectares. The garden features spices, ebony, ebonies, sugar canes and many more. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden (sometimes shortened to the SSR Botanic Garden), commonly known as the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden, is a popular tourist attraction in Pamplemousses, near Port Louis, Mauritius, and the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. Famous for its long pond of giant water lilies (''Victoria amazonica''), the garden was first constructed by Pierre Poivre (17191786) in 1770, and it covers an area of around . Baie-du-Tombeau
Baie-du-Tombeau is a village in Mauritius located in the Pamplemousses District, situated near the Rivière du Tombeau. The village is administered by the Baie-du-Tombeau Village Council under the aegis of the Pamplemousses District Council. According to the census made by Statistics Mauritius in 2011, the population was at 14,687. Baie-Tombeau was home to HMS Mauritius, a Royal Navy wireless station. The bay itself faces west to North-West and has 3 km of coral reef protecting a shallow lagoon and sandy beaches stretching from Rivulet Terre rouge bird sanctuary to the Tombeau river's estuary at Le goulet. The area is particularly appreciated for its easy access to the capital Port Louis ( < 10 minutes ) and for its convenient facilities as well as proximity to the large Riche Terre shopping mall. Seewoosagur Ramgoolam
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (in traditional Hindi: Shivsagar Ram Gulam) (18 September 1900 – 15 December 1985; often referred to as ''Chacha Ramgoolam'' or ''SSR'') was a Mauritian physician, politician, and statesman. He served as the island's only chief minister, first prime minister, and fifth governor-general. He is widely recognized as the nation's founding father (French: ''père de la nation''), although the anti-independence political group at the time of British Mauritius used to call him as a pun in French ''la perte de la nation'' (English: the misleader of the nation). After Guy Rozemont's death in 1956, Ramgoolam became the leader of the Labour Party of Mauritius till his death in 1985. According to Dr. A. G. Pierre Poivre
Pierre Poivre (23 August 1719 – 6 January 1786) was an 18th-century horticulturist and botanist. He was born in Lyon, France. He was a missionary to East Asia, intendant of French colonial islands in the Indian Ocean, and wearer of the cordon of St. Michel. Career In his early 20s (ca. 1739), Poivre was a missionary in Far Eastern locations that included Cochinchina, Guangzhou, and Portuguese Macau. In 1745 as a member of the French East India Company, while on a journey to the East Indies, he was struck by a cannonball on the wrist while engaged in a naval battle with the British. Belle Vue Harel is a village in Mauritius that is located in the Pamplemousses District on the northern part of the island. It is located next to Plaine des Papayes village. It is part of the larger Plaine des Papayes area which as of 2011 had 7,607 inhabitants.
