Palmerston North (New Zealand Electorate)
Palmerston North is a parliamentary electorate, returning one Member of Parliament to the New Zealand House of Representatives. The electorate was first formed for the and was called Palmerston until 1938. The current MP for Palmerston North is Tangi Utikere of the Labour Party. He has held this position since the 2020 election. Profile In December 1887, the House of Representatives voted to reduce its membership from general electorates from 91 to 70. The 1890 electoral redistribution used the same 1886 census data used for the 1887 electoral redistribution. In addition, three-member electorates were introduced in the four main centres. This resulted in a major restructuring of electorates, and Palmerston was one of four electorates to be first created for the 1890 election. Palmerston North reached its current approximate size at the expense of the old Manawatu electorate in the lead up to the introduction of mixed-member proportional (MMP) voting in 1996. James Wilson (New Zealand Politician, Born 1849)
Sir James Glenny Wilson (probably on 29 November 1849 – 3 May 1929) was a New Zealand politician and farmer. Biography Originally from Hawick, Roxburghshire in Scotland, Wilson was educated at Bruce Castle School, in London, and then at the Edinburgh Institution. He emigrated to Victoria in 1870 and worked on a sheep run. He met his future wife, Annie Adams, at the Melbourne Club. She was born in 1848 at Greenvale, Victoria. He went to New Zealand in January 1873 and purchased a large block of rough land in an area between what is now Bulls and Sanson in the Rangitikei district. Once established, he returned to Australia and married Annie Adams near Skipton, Victoria. Wilson represented Foxton in the 8th, 9th & 10th Parliaments (1881–1890), then Palmerston North in the 11th Parliament (1890–1893), and then Otaki in the 12th Parliament (1893–1896), after which retired. 1918 Palmerston By-election
The Palmerston by-election of 1918 was a by-election held in the electorate during the 19th New Zealand Parliament, on 19 December 1918. The by-election was won by the sitting Mayor of Palmerston North, Jimmy Nash with a majority of 315. Background The contest was triggered by the death of incumbent MP David Buick of the Reform Party on 18 November 1918 during the influenza epidemic. Under the terms of the coalition agreement between Reform and the Liberal's a condition was made not to oppose each other in by-elections for deceased or retiring MP's from their own parties. However, both contested the seat after failing to agree on a joint National Government nominee. Mayor Of Palmerston North
The Mayor of Palmerston North is the head of the municipal government of Palmerston North, New Zealand, and presides over the Palmerston North City Council. The current mayor is Grant Smith, who became mayor in a February 2015 by-election. This resulted from the resignation of Jono Naylor in October 2014 after his election to the House of Representatives. Since the 2013 election, Palmerston North is one of the few councils that uses the single transferable vote electoral system for the election of mayor. Jimmy Nash
James Alfred Nash (27 July 1871 – 24 July 1952), known as Jimmy Nash, was a Reform Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand and a Mayor of Palmerston North. Biography Nash was born in 1871 in Foxton to Ann Ellen Webster and Norman Nash. He won the Palmerston electorate (since renamed the Palmerston North electorate) in the 1918 Palmerston by-election after the death of David Buick, and held it to 1935, when he was defeated by the Labour candidate, Joe Hodgens in a three-person contest involving the town's mayor, Gus Mansford. He was Chairman of Committees in 1935. He contested the in the for the National Party, but was again defeated by Hodgens. In 1935, Nash was awarded the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for public and municipal services in the 1951 New Year Honours. The 1918–1920 influenza pandemic, commonly known by the misnomer Spanish flu or as the Great Influenza epidemic, was an exceptionally deadly global influenza pandemic caused by the H1N1 influenza A virus. Reform Party (New Zealand)
The Reform Party, formally the New Zealand Political Reform League, was New Zealand's second major political party, having been founded as a conservative response to the original Liberal Party. It was in government between 1912 and 1928, and later formed a coalition with the United Party (a remnant of the Liberals), and then merged with United to form the modern National Party. Foundation The Liberal Party, founded by John Ballance and fortified by Richard Seddon, was highly dominant in New Zealand politics at the beginning of the 20th century. ''The Wanganui Herald'', originally published as ''The Evening Herald'', was a daily newspaper in Wanganui published from 1867 to 1986 when it was replaced by a community newspaper of the same name. John Ballance arrived in Wanganui in August 1866; he was to become New Zealand's prime minister in 1891. Ballance aimed for a career in journalism, had strong political views, and occasionally wrote for the ''Wanganui Times''. The established newspaper at the time was the ''Wanganui Chronicle'' founded in 1856. On 3 June 1867, Ballance published the first issue of ''The Evening Herald'' after having purchased a printing press. David Buick (politician)
David Buick (29 April 1848 – 18 November 1918) was a New Zealand politician of the Reform Party. A New Zealand-born sheep breeder, he represented farming interests in Parliament. He owned racing horses and won various high-profile races. He died in office in the 1918 influenza epidemic. Early life Buick was born in Wellington in 1848. His father, William Buick, had come to Wellington in 1841 on the ''Arab'' from England. Buick senior farmed in the Hutt Valley, with Buick junior taking over the farm in 1867. On 5 June 1876, he married Mary Ann (Polly) Buick (née Hill), daughter of I. M. Hill from Nelson. In 1881, Buick junior bought land in the Manawatu's Kairanga Block. Living at a time when many New Zealanders were immigrants, Buick was proud of his birth in the colony and referred to it on occasions. William Thomas Wood
William Thomas Wood (10 June 1854 – 10 June 1943) was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand. Early life and family Born in Hobart, Tasmania, in June 1854, Wood was the son of Robert Wood and Charlotte Wood (née Watford). After leaving school he worked as a blacksmith for seven years, before moving to New Zealand in 1872. He lived first in Dunedin, working as a manager on the construction of the Port Chalmers– South railway. In 1875 he settled at Kumara on the West Coast, where he established a blacksmith's business. He married Ellen Jolly of Kumara in 1879, and the couple went on to have seven children. In March 1879, Wood moved to Palmerston North, setting up as a blacksmith there, and continuing in that business until it was taken over by his eldest son in 1900. Richard Seddon
Richard John Seddon (22 June 1845 – 10 June 1906) was a New Zealand politician who served as the 15th premier (prime minister) of New Zealand from 1893 until his death. In office for thirteen years, he is to date New Zealand's longest-serving head of government. Seddon was born in Eccleston near St Helens, Lancashire, in England. He arrived in New Zealand in 1866 to join an uncle in the West Coast goldfields. His prominence in local politics gained him a seat in the House of Representatives in 1879. Seddon became a key member of the Liberal Party under the leadership of John Ballance, but differed from him greatly due to his conservativism clashing with Ballance's progressivism.
