Basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a backboard at each end of the court, while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one, two or three one-point free throws. Libertas Livorno was an Italian professional basketball team based in Livorno, Tuscany. History Established in 1947, the side played in the first division Serie A from 1959 to 1968 , in 1970-71 and again from 1981 to 1994 (with one season in the second division Serie A2. Merging with another Livorno side, Pallacanestro Livorno under the Libertas name, the side went bankrupt in 1994. Another Livorno side Basket Livorno represented the city in the Serie A afterwards before itself filing bankruptcy. Libertas Liburnia Livorno, playing in the regional Serie C, is the symbolic heir to the side but was founded in 2004 with a new affiliation to the Italian federation. Pallacanestro Reggiana, also known for sponsorship reasons as UnaHotels Reggio Emilia, is an Italian professional basketball team based in Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna. It plays in the LBA as of the 2022-23 season. History 1970s Pallacanestro Reggiana was founded on 3 September 1974 by eight friends who wanted to establish a club that would unite the basketball community of Reggio Emilia. They started to play in the regional Promozione in a white and blue jersey sponsored by Magazzini Jolly, with the season ending with a promotion to the Serie D, in which they stayed a couple of seasons before again moving up, to the Serie C. Pallacanestro Pavia was an Italian professional basketball club based in Pavia, Lombardy. For past club sponsorship names, see the list below. History The club was established in 1943 as Onda Pavia by industrialist Luigi Cazzani. In 1955–56, Pavia finished at third place in the Serie A, the national championship. It played in the first division until 1958 when it was expelled. Onda Pavia was refounded a few years later. At the end of the 1978–79 season the team was promoted to the third division Serie B. The club then climbed to the second division in 1985. Partenope Napoli Basket is an Italian amateur basketball team from Naples, Campania. History Partenope Napoli Basket first took part in the top-tier level Italian first division, the LBA, from 1963 to 1965. After stabilizing itself in the top level Italian league in 1967, it stayed there until 1975, with a second-place finish in the 1968–69 season. The club won the 1968 Italian Cup and the European-wide secondary level 1969–70 season's FIBA European Cup Winners' Cup. Pallacanestro Messina was an Italian professional basketball team based in Messina, Sicily. History Established in 1976, the club was admitted to the first division Serie A for the 2003-04 season after Virtus Bologna was excluded for financial irregularities. Messina struggled on every front during that season, finishing dead last in the league whilst suffering from financial problems and a lack of interest from the public. Pallacanestro Milano 1958 is an Italian amateur basketball club based in Milan. Following an uninterrupted presence in the top tier Serie A from 1964 to 1980, the club fell down the divisions and plays in the fifth division amateur Serie C Regionale, Girone B as of the 2014-15 season. History Pallacanestro Milano was founded in 1955 by Valentino Milanaccio in order for his son and his friends from the San Gioachimo oratory to play basketball.
