Páidí Ó Lionáird
Páidí Ó Lionáird (born ) is an Irish television presenter and columnist from Cúil Aodha, County Cork. Since 1997, Ó Lionáird has been the presenter of current affairs and entertainment shows on the Irish language channel TG4. Early life Páidí Ó Lionáird was born in Gort na Scairte, Baile Bhúirne in Cúil Aodha, part of the Muskerry Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) area of County Cork. The youngest of twelve siblings, his father was the principal of a local secondary school and owned a small holding of land. His older brothers include Iarla Ó Lionáird, a singer and producer, Seán, judge on TG4's ''Feirm Factor'', and Peadar, co-owner of Folláin, which is a jam and chutney manufacturer. After leaving school, he initially studied Furniture Technology and Design at Dundalk Institute of Technology, before working as a carpenter in London. Cúil Aodha
Cúil Aodha (), anglicised as Coolea, is a townland and village in the Gaeltacht region of Muskerry in County Cork, Ireland. The area is near the source of the River Sullane in the Derrynasaggart Mountains. Geography Cúil Aodha townland is in the civil parish of Ballyvourney, and is an official Gaeltacht area, where the Irish language is used alongside English. The village of Cúil Aodha is close to a number of wind farms which are located on the mountains which mark the border between County Cork and County Kerry. The area is mountainous and is led to by mainly narrow roadways. Cúil Aodha lies within the Cork North-West Dáil constituency. According to the 2016 census, of the 216 people living in Cúil Aodha and the small area surrounding it, 86% were able to speak Irish. In the Gort na Tiobratan electoral division, in which the village is located, 45% of that population (353 people) stated that they speak Irish on a daily basis outside the education system. TG4 (; , ) is an Irish free-to-air public service television channel. It launched on 31 October 1996 and is available online and through its on-demand service TG4 Player in Ireland and beyond. An Coimisinéir Teanga ('The Language Commissioner') is an office created by the Official Languages Act 2003 in Ireland to promote and safeguard the respective language rights of Irish and English speakers in Ireland. The Coimisinéir is appointed by the President of Ireland. Role The Coimisinéir's job is mainly to "police" the articles of the Act, which gives legislative force to the Irish Constitution's definition of Irish as the country's "first official Language" and English as the "second official language". The Coimisinéir's office develops language plans for public bodies to ensure that they fulfill their responsibilities to speakers of both official languages.
