Puntius Sophore
The pool barb, spotfin swamp barb, or stigma barb (''Puntius sophore'') is a tropical freshwater and brackish fish belonging to the Puntius genus in the family Cyprinidae. It is native to inland waters in Asia and is found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yunnan, China. Description It reaches an adult size of 18 cm. (7 in) and a weight of . The first maturity of female occurs at 4.7 cm. At the population level, size at 50% maturity (LM50) is 8.6-9.0 cm. Habitat Its native habitat is rivers, streams, and ponds in plains and submontane regions. It is a plentiful shoaling fish. Breeding Pool barbs naturally breed within a temperature range 20–30 °C and >50 mm rainfall. The threshold gonadosomatic index (GSI) for breeding is 10.5 units in females. Females also need to attain a body fitness (Fulton's condition factor) of at least 1.6-1.7 units for successful spawning decision. Synonyms This fish was originally na ...

Barbodes
''Barbodes'' is a genus of small to medium-sized cyprinid fish native to tropical Asia. The majority of the species are from Southeast Asia. Many species are threatened and some from the Philippines (Lake Lanao) are already extinct. A survey carried out in 1992 only found three of the endemic ''Barbodes'' species,Endangered Species Handbook: It's Too Late – Fish Extinctions.' Retrieved 29 September 2012 and only two (''Barbodes lindog'' and ''Barbodes tumba, B. tumba'') were found in 2008. Several members of this genus were formerly included in ''Puntius''. Etymology The name is derived from the Latin word ''barbus'', meaning "barbel", and the Greek language, Greek word ''oides'', meaning "similar to". Species There are currently 48 recognized species in this genus, of which 15 are considered extinct and 2 considered possibly extinct: * ''Barbodes amarus'' Albert William Herre, Herre, 1924 (Pait) * ''Barbodes aurotaeniatus'' (Gilbert Tirant, Tirant, 1885) * ''Barbodes banks ...

Oliotius
The checker barb (''Oliotius oligolepis'') is a species of cyprinid fish endemic to creeks, rivers, and lakes in Sumatra, Indonesia. It has also been established in the wild in Colombia. The adult males have red fins with black tips. It will grow up to a length of TL. This species is the only known member of its genus. Etymology The genus name ''Oliotius'' is derived as a combination of a portion of the specific epithet ''oligolepis'' and its former genus name '' Puntius''. The common name "checker barb" (as well as such related names as "checkered barb", "chequer barb" and "checkerboard barb") derives from the black marks on its side similar in appearance to those found on a checkerboard. Taxonomic issue This species has sometimes been placed in the genus ''Barbus'' though '' Barbus oligolepis'' Battalgil, 1941 properly refers to another fish species that is only found in Turkey. Since Bleeker's ''oligolepis'' is not placed in ''Barbus'', both names are valid. Habitat Ch ...

Dawkinsia
''Dawkinsia'' is a genus of cyprinid fishes from freshwater in South India and Sri Lanka. It was split off (i.e., reclassified) from genus '' Puntius'' in 2012. Etymology ''Dawkinsia'' is named after the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in recognition of his "contribution to the public understanding of science, particularly, of evolutionary science". Dawkins describes this as "a great honour". Description Adults typically measure SL. They do not have rostral barbels but might have maxillary barbels. Juveniles have a colour pattern consisting of three black bars on body; this persists to adult stage in some species. Adults have a black, horizontally elongate blotch on the caudal peduncle. Cyprinidae
Cyprinidae is a family of freshwater fish commonly called the carp or minnow family, including the carps, the true minnows, and their relatives the barbs and barbels, among others. Cyprinidae is the largest and most diverse fish family, and the largest vertebrate animal family overall, with about 1,780 species divided into 166 valid genera. Cyprinids range from about in size to the giant barb (''Catlocarpio siamensis''). By genus and species count, the family makes up more than two-thirds of the ostariophysian order Cypriniformes. The family name is derived from the Greek word ( 'carp'). Biology and ecology Cyprinids are stomachless, or ''agastric'', fish with toothless jaws. Even so, food can be effectively chewed by the gill rakers of the specialized last gill bow. These pharyngeal teeth allow the fish to make chewing motions against a chewing plate formed by a bony process of the skull. The pharyngeal teeth are unique to each species and are used to identify spec ...

Description Adults are small, typically less than Fish measurement, SL. Both rostral and maxillary Barbel (anatomy), barbels are present. Lateral line is complete and has 18–26 pored scales on body.
