Prêmio Brasil Olímpico (''Brazil Olympic Prize'') is the name given to the highest recognition that a Brazilian sportsperson, athlete can receive nationally. History and configuration The award was created in 1999 by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC), who wanted to have a form of maximum recognition that could be bestowed upon the Brazilian athletes that were considered to have been the best in the country. The first installment of the award was held in São Paulo (city), São Paulo, but every other ceremony thereafter has been held in Rio de Janeiro (city), Rio de Janeiro. A strike of the Theatro Municipal (Rio de Janeiro), Theatro Municipal employees in 2016 postponed the ceremony until March 29, 2017. An athlete is most commonly a person who competes in one or more sports involving physical strength, speed, power, or endurance. The sport of sailing involves a variety of competitive sailing formats that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. Thiago Machado Vilela Pereira (born 26 January 1986) is a retired Brazilian international competition swimming (sport), swimmer. One of the greatest swimmers in the history of Brazil, Pereira won the silver medal in the 400-meter medley swimming, individual medley at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, beating the then-current Olympic champion Michael Phelps. Diego Matias Hypólito (; born 19 June 1986) is a Brazilian gymnast, the 2005 and 2007 World Champion in the floor exercise. Torben Schmidt Grael (born 22 July 1960) is one of the most well known Brazilian sailors, renowned in international competitions. A descendant of Danes, he was taken sailing by his grandfather at the age of five years on the sailboat ''Aileen'', of the 6 Metre class, which was the boat used by the silver medal-winning 1912 Summer Olympics Danish sailing team. Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima (born 4 July 1969) is a Brazilian retired long-distance runner. He was born in Cruzeiro do Oeste, Paraná. While leading the marathon after at the 2004 Summer Olympics, he was attacked on the course by Irish former priest Cornelius "Neil" Horan. Following the incident, Lima fell from first to third place, eventually winning the bronze medal. He was later awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal for his sportsmanship shown in that race.
