The Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is a provincial political party in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The party was founded in 1949 and most recently formed the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador from the 2003 Newfoundland and Labrador general election, 2003 general election until the 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador general election, 2015 general election. The party has served as the official opposition to the government of Newfoundland and Labrador since 14 December 2015. On October 14, 2023, MHA Tony Wakeham was elected leader. History Origins The party originated before Newfoundland's Canadian Confederation, confederation with Canada as the Responsible Government League (RGL). 2015 Newfoundland And Labrador General Election
The 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador general election, held on November 30, 2015, elected members of the 48th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Progressive Conservative Party which had governed since 2003 election, was defeated by the Liberal Party, which won a majority in the new assembly. The election had been scheduled for October 13, 2015, under Newfoundland and Labrador's House of Assembly Act, mandating a fixed election day on the second Tuesday in October in the fourth calendar year after the previous election. However, the House of Assembly amended the act in June 2015, to delay the election until November 30, 2015, so that the election campaign would not overlap with the federal election scheduled on October 19, 2015. Following the result of the election no party with the word "Conservative" in its name formed the government in either a provincial or federal jurisdiction in Canada for the first time since 1943. Tony Wakeham
Tony Wakeham is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in the 2019 provincial election, and was re-elected in the 2021 provincial election. He represents the electoral district of Stephenville-Port au Port as a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Progressive Conservative Party. On January 17, 2023, Wakeham announced he would be a candidate in the 2023 provincial PC leadership election. He won the election and became Leader of the Opposition. In 2018, Wakeham ran for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, but was defeated by St. John's lawyer Ches Crosbie. Bonavista—Trinity—Conception was a federal electoral district in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1968 to 2003. This riding was created in 1966 from parts of Bonavista—Twillingate and Trinity—Conception ridings. It was abolished in 2003 when it was redistributed into Avalon, Bonavista—Exploits and Random—Burin—St. George's ridings. Frank Moores
Frank Duff Moores (February 18, 1933 – July 10, 2005) served as the second premier of Newfoundland as leader of the Progressive Conservatives from 1972 until his retirement in 1979. Moores was also a successful businessman in both the fishing industry and federal lobbying. He was accused accepting secret commissions as part of the Airbus affair. Gerald Ryan Ottenheimer (June 4, 1934January 18, 1998) was a Canadian politician and Senator. Ottenheimer, was the scion of one of Newfoundland's wealthiest family. His grandfather was prosperous fishing magnate James M. Ryan. Clyde Kirby Wells, (born November 9, 1937) was the fifth premier of Newfoundland from 1989 to 1996, and subsequently Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador, sitting on the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador (Court of Appeal) from 1998 to 2009. Edward Roberts (Canadian Politician)
Edward Moxon Roberts (September 1, 1940 – January 14, 2022) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He first served as a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly (MHA) from 1966 to 1985 representing White Bay North, and again from 1992 to 1996 representing Naskaupi. He went on to serve as the eleventh lieutenant governor of Newfoundland and Labrador from 2002 until 2008. Early life Roberts was born in St. John's, Dominion of Newfoundland, on September 1, 1940. John Crosbie
John Carnell Crosbie (January 30, 1931 – January 10, 2020) was a Canadian provincial and federal politician who served as the 12th lieutenant governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Avalon Peninsula
The Avalon Peninsula () is a large peninsula that makes up the southeast portion of the island of Newfoundland in Canada. It is in size. The peninsula is home to 270,348 people, about 52% of the province's population, according to the 2016 Canadian census. The peninsula is the location of St. John's, the provincial capital and largest city. It is connected to the main section of the island by the wide Isthmus of Avalon.
