This is a list of state prisons in the U.S. state of North Carolina: In January 2015, the former five male divisions and one female division were consolidated into four regions, as listed below. As of February 2015, North Carolina houses about 38,000 offenders in 56 correctional institutions. Alexander Correctional Institution
Alexander Correctional Institution (AXCI) is a North Carolina Department of Public Safety state prison for men, located in Taylorsville, North Carolina. The facility opened in 2004 as one of three 1000-bed Close Custody prisons built in the state. The institution is a Close Custody prison, used mainly for housing felons. Inmates are assigned to one of four internal units: the Blue Unit for transferring prisoners and those with chronic health issues, Red Unit for security risk group and Mental Health prisoners, Green Unit for inmates on internal work assignments, and a Restrictive Housing Unit for disciplinary purposes. CHYDARU
CHYDARU, unabbreviated name Chapel Hill Youth Development and Research Unit, was an experimental youth prison operated by the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the North Carolina prison system. Built in 1945, it opened as a prison for youth under the age of 18 on May 1, 1964. The project was as an advancement in prison structure. It closed later in 1965 due to budget shortages. North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW) is the primary North Carolina Department of Public Safety prison facility housing female inmates on a campus in Raleigh, North Carolina, and serves as a support facility for the six other women's prisons throughout the state. The facility's inmate population, which is the largest in the state, consists of inmates from all custody levels and control statuses including death row, maximum security, close custody, medium security, minimum security, and safekeepers. Neuse Correctional Institution
Neuse Correctional Institution is a minimum and medium security state prison for men in the United States, operated by the State of North Carolina Department of Public Safety in Goldsboro in Wayne County, North Carolina. Housing 816 prisoners, Neuse Correctional Institution received its first inmates on August 27, 1994. Neuse was built to replace Triangle Correctional Center in Raleigh as the eastern North Carolina processing center for adult male misdemeanants. The original 500-bed construction project was authorized in July 1992 with a budget of $10.6 million, and another 100-bed dormitory was added to the construction program in July 1993. Roanoke River Correctional Institution
The Roanoke River Correctional Institution is a medium security prison in North Carolina, United States. The second oldest state prison in North Carolina, it has operated from 1892 to the present. It is located in Halifax County, on approximately 7,500 acres that was purchased by the state in 1899. It was previously named the Caledonia State Prison Farm and the Caledonia Correctional Institution. The prison is mostly for men serving a life sentence. Halifax Community College works with the prison to provide vocational classes, adult basic education and preparation for the GED tests. Pasquotank Correctional Institution
Pasquotank Correctional Institution is a state prison in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The institution houses male close custody inmates and has a capacity of 896. There is also a 256-bed minimum security prison adjacent to the prison, which was funded by a $87.5 million prison construction program approved by the North Carolina General Assembly in July 1993. On October 12, 2017, Pasquotank Correctional Institution became the site of the deadliest escape attempt in North Carolina history when four inmates attempted to escape from the facility, killing four facility employees in the process.
