Princeton, Newton County, Texas
Princeton is a ghost town in Newton County, Texas, United States, along the Sabine River. History The town was located on the Sabine River near the site of Deweyville, about 30 miles northeast of Beaumont in southeastern Newton County. The site was platted in 1839 on Princeton Bluff (also known as Possum Bluff). It became a ferry and boat landing site for travellers on the Sabine River. A post office briefly opened from 1880 to 1881. The town never really grew in size, and as Deweyville rose to prominence, the town was abandoned around the turn of the 20th century. Newton County, Texas
Newton County is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 12,217. Its county seat is Newton. The county is named for John Newton, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Newton County is included in the Beaumont- Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2000, it had the second-lowest population density for all counties in East Texas, behind only Red River County, and the lowest population density in Deep East Texas. Deweyville, Texas
Deweyville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Newton County, on the central eastern border of Texas, United States. The population was 571 at the 2020 census, down from 1,023 at the 2010 census. Geography Deweyville is located at (30.296478, -93.749441). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which, of it is land and of it (0.71%) is water. it is located along the Sabine River. Historical development This settlement was established in 1898 as a sawmill site by the Sabine Tram Company, which had a logging operation. It was named after George Dewey, an admiral in the United States Navy who was victorious in the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish–American War in the Philippines that same year. Within two years a post office would be established. For a short time this town was the largest in Newton County. Electricity was installed for the residents of Deweyville in the 1920s. Beaumont is a coastal city in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the seat of government of Jefferson County, within the Beaumont– Port Arthur metropolitan statistical area, located in Southeast Texas on the Neches River about east of Houston (city center to city center).
