Prince Hulon Preston, Jr.
Prince Hulon Preston Jr. (July 5, 1908 – February 8, 1961) was an American politician, educator and lawyer. Life Preston was born in Monroe, Georgia. He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens and was admitted to the Georgia state bar in 1930. He became a practicing lawyer in Statesboro, Georgia. After serving in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1935 through 1938, Preston enlisted as a private in the United States Army in 1942 and was promoted through the ranks to captain by the time of his discharge on October 13, 1945. He was then elected as a judge for the Statesboro city courts; however, he also won election to the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat to serve in the 80th United States Congress and never took the bench. A staunch segregationist, in 1956, Preston signed "The Southern Manifesto." Preston was reelected for six additional terms before losing his reelection bid in 1960. He died the next year in Sava ... The Declaration of Constitutional Principles (known informally as the Southern Manifesto) was a document written in February and March 1956, during the 84th United States Congress, in opposition to racial integration of public places. The manifesto was signed by 19 US Senators and 82 Representatives from the Southern United States. The signatories included the entire congressional delegations from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Virginia, most of the members from Florida and North Carolina, and several members from Tennessee and Texas. All of them were from the former Confederate states. 97 were Democrats; 4 were Republicans. The Manifesto was drafted to support reversing the landmark Supreme Court 1954 ruling '' Brown v. The States' Rights Democratic Party (whose members are often called the Dixiecrats), also colloquially referred to as the Dixiecrat Party, was a short-lived segregationist, States' Rights, and old southern democratic political party in the United States, active primarily in the South. It arose due to a Southern regional split in opposition to the national Democratic Party. After President Harry S. Truman, the leader of the Democratic Party, ordered integration of the military in 1948 and other actions to address civil rights of African Americans, including the first presidential proposal for comprehensive civil and voting rights, many Southern white politicians who objected to this course organized themselves as a breakaway faction.
