The 1998 season of the Torneo Descentralizado was the 83rd season of the top category of Peruvian football (soccer). It was played by 12 teams. The national champion was Universitario. The national championship was divided into two half-year tournaments, the Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura. Each was played on a home-and-away round-robin basis. The winners of each would play for the national title in a playoff. If the same club had won both tournaments, it would have won the national championship automatically. Following-season Copa Libertadores berths went to the winner of each tournament, while the runners-up played for a Copa CONMEBOL spot. The bottom team on the aggregate table was relegated, while the eleventh place held a relegation/promotion playoff against the winner of the Segunda División (Second Division). Lawn Tennis is a Peruvian sports club, playing in the city of Lima, Peru. History Lawn Tennis was founded on June 27, 1884, by a group of English immigrants, and had Juan P. Gallagher Gibbs as their first chairman. Its original headquarters were in the Parque de la Exposición, but it later moved to the Jesús María district in the early 20th century. The club is the usual ground for the Peru Davis Cup team's matches. The club's main sports are Tennis, along with swimming, volleyball, badminton, squash and Paleta Frontón. Football Lawn Tennis' footballing section was active in the early days of Peruvian football, but it only entered official competitions for the first time in 1927, when it won the División Intermedia, attaining promotion to the 1928 Primera División. Foot Ball Club Melgar, known simply as FBC Melgar or Melgar, is a Peru, Peruvian professional Association football, football club based in Arequipa. It is one of Peru's oldest football teams, founded in 1915 under the name Juventud Melgar by a group of football enthusiasts from Arequipa. Deportivo Wanka is a Peruvian football club, based in the city of Huancayo in the Peruvian Andes. It was founded in 1969 and is named after the Wankas people who formerly inhabited the area and after whom the city of Huancayo is named. José Gálvez FBC is a Peruvian football club based in Chimbote, Ancash. The club was founded in 1951 under the name Manuel Rivera after the famous Chimbote born footballer Manuel Rivera. The club was forced to change its name because the FPF did not allow clubs to be named after living people. Then on 11 November 1963 the club decided the new name would be José Gálvez FBC.
