Presidential Innovation Fellows
The Presidential Innovation Fellows program is a competitive fellowship program that pairs top innovators from the private sector, non-profits, and academia with top innovators in government to collaborate on solutions that aim to deliver significant results in months, not years. It was established in 2012 and has operated continuously since then. The program focuses on generating measurable results, using innovation techniques from private industry such as Lean Startup, Design Thinking, and Agile Development. It is a service of GSA's Technology Transformation Services department. The highly competitive program features an acceptance rate in the single digits. In the inaugural round in the summer of 2012, over 700 applicants competed for 18 fellowships. The second class included 43 fellows selected from over 2000 applicants. Dan Hammer is an environmental economist and winner of both the inaugural Pritzker Award and the Mark Bingham Award for Excellence in Achievement by Young Alumni at UC Berkeley. He is a National Geographic Fellow, and served as the Senior Policy Advisor to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith in the Obama Administration. Hammer was the Presidential Innovation Fellow who released the first API listing for NASA, amounting to the data infrastructure design for the space agency's public data. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is an independent agency of the United States government tasked with environmental protection matters. President Richard Nixon proposed the establishment of EPA on July 9, 1970; it began operation on December 2, 1970, after Nixon signed an executive order. Beverly Park Woolf is a retired American computer scientist specializing in the applications of artificial intelligence in educational technology and intelligent tutoring systems. She is a professor emerita in the Manning College of Information & Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
